Today, June 27, is National PTSD Awareness Day, a day dedicated to understanding and challenging misconceptions about post-traumatic stress disorder. This observance, established by the U.S. Senate in 2010, aims to encourage those struggling to seek help! PTSD Awareness Month, observed throughout June, highlights the importance of recognizing the condition's impact and promoting available treatments.

PTSD can affect anyone, with approximately 5% of Americans experiencing it in a given year. Veterans are also significantly impacted, with 7 out of every 100 veterans developing PTSD at some point in their lives. To support those affected, resources like the Veterans Crisis Line (dial 988, press 1) and mobile apps such as "Mindfulness Coach" and “PTSD Coach" are available.

If you or someone you know is struggling with
PTSD, consider the following steps:

• Seek support: Reach out to counseling, therapy, or support groups
• Practice self-care: Engage in activities like mindfulness, journaling, and limiting stress
• Offer support: If someone you care about has PTSD, ask how you can help and offer words of comfort.

When the Coast Guard "Reserve" was authorized by act of Congress on June 23, 1939, the Coast Guard was given a legislative mandate to use civilian volunteers to promote safety on and over the high seas. Today we celebrate the Birthday of the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
