Ride along with B Shift crews who made quick work of a recent vehicle fire. Firefighters arrived, controlled the fire quickly, and kept the incident from becoming a larger problem.

If you see smoke or flames coming from your vehicle, pull over as soon as it is safe, turn the vehicle off, get everyone out, and move well away from the vehicle. Do not open the hood if you suspect an engine fire, since that can add oxygen and cause the fire to grow. Call 911 and wait for firefighters to arrive.

This weekend, Danville Fire Department had the honor of celebrating the mothers in our department family: the moms, wives, partners, and those who keep things running at home while our crews keep things running here.

Our duty crews and administration put together a Mother's Day brunch right here at the station, and it was exactly what it was meant to be. A small but sincere way to say thank you to the families who share their people with us every day. Firefighters spend roughly a third of their lives at work. That's a lot of missed mornings, late dinners, and holidays covered. The families who support that deserve more than we can ever fully give back, but we're committed to trying.

A huge thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to help set up and decorate.

This is just one of several events we have planned throughout the year to recognize and celebrate the families behind our responders. You make this department possible, and we don't take that for granted.

Happy Mother's Day to all the incredible women in our department family.

At 7:09 a.m. Danville Fire Department units were dispatched to a reported structure fire in the 1200 block of Halifax Road.

Initial arriving units found a working fire and immediately began fire suppression and search and rescue operations. Firefighters located and rescued one occupant from the home; a second occupant was found deceased inside the residence.

The Danville Fire Department responded with three engines, one tower truck, one command unit, one support unit, three fire marshals, and three command staff members, for a total response of 21 personnel.

The occupants are being assisted by the American Red Cross. The Danville Fire Department was also assisted on scene by the Danville Life Saving Crew, Danville Electric Department, Danville Water & Gas, and the Danville Police Department.

The fire is currently under investigation by the Danville Fire Marshal’s Office in partnership with the Danville Police Department.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available.

Danville fire units are currently operating at a fire in the area of Lynch Street and Halifax Road. First arriving units have completed multiple rescues from the structure.

This morning Danville Fire units responded to a working apartment fire. Crews arrived on scene, made entry, and quickly extinguished the remaining fire. There were no injuries to the occupants or responders. The fire is being investigated by the Danville Fire Department Fire Marshals office.

We also want to give credit to the Danville VA Police Department officers who arrived before us and used a fire extinguisher to knock down most of the fire. Their quick action helped limit the damage and made a real difference. We will even forgive them for parking exactly where we wanted to be.

This incident is also a good reminder that a fire extinguisher can be an important tool when used safely and correctly. A few quick tips:

Keep a fire extinguisher in an easy-to-reach location, especially near the kitchen, garage, or laundry area.

Only use an extinguisher on a small fire when you have a clear way out.

Remember PASS:
Pull the pin.
Aim at the base of the fire.
Squeeze the handle.
Sweep side to side.

If the fire is spreading, producing heavy smoke, or you are unsure what to do, get out, close the door behind you, and call 911.

Thanks to Danville Utilities and the Danville Life Saving and First Aid Crew, Inc. for their assistance as well. Great teamwork this morning by everyone involved.

Many of our team’s interactions with the public begin well before any emergency. Often, those interactions involve one of our Fire Marshals.

Here in Danville, the Fire Marshal’s Office helps enforce the Fire Code, conducts fire cause investigations, supports fire prevention programs, and works directly with residents, families, and businesses to make our community safer.

Whether they are investigating a fire or helping install a car seat, the goal is the same, protect lives before the next emergency happens.

These photos show two important sides of the same mission: reducing risk and protecting people. At a fire scene, our Fire Marshals work to determine where and how a fire started, document what happened, identify hazards, and help prevent the next one. Away from the scene, they are just as involved in prevention through inspections, plan reviews, permits, fire and life-safety education, smoke alarm support, and child safety seat checks.
