🚴♀️🌎 Happy World Bicycle Day! 🌎🚴♂️
Today we celebrate the bicycle as a healthy, affordable, and environmentally friendly way to travel, exercise, and enjoy our communities. As more riders choose e-bikes, it's important to understand the laws and ride safely.
⚠️ KNOW THE DIFFERENCE: E-BIKES vs. E-MOTORCYCLES ⚠️
✅ E-Bikes:
• Must have functional pedals
• Motor must be 750 watts or less
• Top assisted speed of 28 mph or less
• Follow bicycle laws
• No license, registration, or insurance required
❌ E-Motorcycles:
• Do not have pedals
• Typically have motors ranging from 2,000–6,000 watts
• Can exceed 45 mph
• Follow motorcycle laws
• License, registration, and insurance are required
Indiana recognizes three classes of e-bikes:
🔹 Class 1: Pedal-assist only, up to 20 mph
🔹 Class 2: Throttle or pedal-assist, up to 20 mph
🔹 Class 3: Pedal-assist only, up to 28 mph
Additional Indiana E-Bike Laws:
• Riders under age 15 may not operate a Class 3 e-bike
• Class 1 and Class 2 e-bikes may generally be used anywhere traditional bicycles are allowed
• Class 3 e-bikes are permitted on roads and bike lanes but may be restricted from certain paths and trails
• E-bikes must display a permanent label identifying their class, top assisted speed, and motor wattage
• Modified e-bikes must be relabeled to reflect any changes
🚲 Bike Safety Reminders:
✔️ Wear a properly fitted helmet
✔️ Follow traffic signs and signals
✔️ Use lights and reflectors when riding at night
✔️ Stay alert and avoid distractions
✔️ Make yourself visible to motorists with bright or reflective clothing
✔️ Share the road responsibly with pedestrians and vehicles
Whether you're riding a traditional bike or an e-bike, know the laws, ride safely, and enjoy the freedom of two wheels.
