In Memory of Sheriff Steve Draper

The Henry County Sheriff’s Office joins our community and law enforcement family in mourning the passing of Martinsville City Sheriff Steve Draper.

Sheriff Draper devoted much of his life to public service. He began working with the Martinsville Sheriff’s Office in 1973 and was elected Sheriff in 1993, taking office on January 1, 1994. His remarkable career made him the longest-serving sheriff in the Commonwealth of Virginia, a distinction that reflects decades of dedication, leadership, and service.

For more than three decades as Sheriff, Steve was a familiar and respected presence throughout Martinsville and Henry County. His service extended far beyond his own community, including serving as President of the Virginia Sheriffs’ Association and in numerous leadership roles throughout the Commonwealth.

To those of us in law enforcement, Sheriff Draper was more than a neighboring Sheriff. He was a colleague, a partner, a friend, and an example of what a lifetime dedicated to public service looks like.

Sheriff Wayne Davis and the men and women of the Henry County Sheriff’s Office extend our deepest condolences to Sheriff Draper’s family, friends, and the entire Martinsville Sheriff’s Office. We stand beside them during this incredibly difficult time.

Sheriff Draper leaves behind a legacy that will not be measured simply by the number of years he wore the badge, but by the people he served, the officers he influenced, the partnerships he built, and the community to which he devoted his life.

Rest easy, Sheriff Draper. Your watch has ended, but your legacy of service will live on throughout Martinsville, Henry County, and the Commonwealth of Virginia.

🚌 SCHOOL BUS STOP LAW: Know the Rules!

With the school year starting back up, here’s a refresher on when you must stop for a school bus:

✅ 2-lane roads – Stop, both directions
✅ 2-lane roads w/ turning lane – Stop, both directions
✅ 4-lane roads, no median – Stop, both directions
✅ 4+ lane divided highway (median) – Only traffic behind the bus must stop

When those red lights flash and the stop arm extends, kids are getting on or off — please slow down and stay alert. Let’s keep our students safe this year!

🚨 SCHOOL IS BACK — SLOW DOWN! Parents, remind your teens: PUT THE PHONE DOWN, SLOW DOWN, AND PAY ATTENTION! Parents, this applies to YOU too—SLOW DOWN!

Heads up Pittsylvania County! Tomorrow is the first day back to school for the nearly 8,000 students in Pittsylvania County Schools! That means 175 buses and A LOT more drivers (including student drivers and high schoolers who recently obtained their driver's licenses) will be on the road.

A few reminders below:

đźš« Do NOT exceed the speed limit in a school zone. Speeding in a school zone is very dangerous and jeopardizes your safety and the cars around you. Being convicted of speeding in a school zone will likely remain on your permanent criminal record and is punishable with a fine of up to $2,500, up to 12 months in jail, and a 6-month suspension of your driver's license.

🚍 Come to a complete STOP when you see a school bus with flashing lights loading or unloading students. The only time you don't need to stop is if the bus is on the opposite side of the road and there is a barrier or unpaved area between the two sides.

đźš—đźš—đźš— Plan for an increase in traffic on the roads as students, teachers, and support staff all make their way to the 22 schools across Pittsylvania County. Expect your commute to take a few minutes longer than it might have this summer.

📵 Do not drive distracted. Using a phone while driving is illegal in Virginia, but it's about more than the law; it's about protecting yourself and those around you. With the increase in traffic and slow-moving vehicles, any distraction can be fatal. Avoid anything that will prevent you from putting 100% of your focus on the road around you.

Today was a beautiful reminder of what community is all about. ❤️
Despite a rocky start with the weather.Seeing the smiles on the kids' faces, hearing their laughter, and watching families enjoy great food, music, and time together made it all worthwhile.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your unwavering support over the years. Mount Hermon Volunteer Fire & Rescue wouldn't be what it is today without this incredible community. We are honored to serve you, and we truly appreciate each and every one of you.
