You're Invited!

The Coastal Resources Division of The Georgia Department of Natural Resources' Georgia Coastal Management Program is hosting a "Build Your Own Rain Barrel Workshop" in partnership with Coca-Cola United!

Did you know: A rain barrel can save most homeowners 2,000 gallons of water each year which can be used for watering gardens, washing cars and other projects around the house?

At the workshop, rain barrel installation, maintenance and safety are discussed, along with instructions for the conversion kit which includes ALL parts needed for installation. Staff will be on hand with the hardware supplies and tools necessary to help you assemble the barrels on-site – ready to take home and use. The conversion kit uses a diverter system which eliminates the need for cutting off gutter downspouts, mosquitoes and over-flow valves.

Registration fee is $45 and includes the 50-gallon drum, instructions and all supplies needed to build your own rain barrel. Please note that if registering for this workshop you must attend the educational presentation and construct your rain barrel at the workshop. Registration will be limited and is available on a first come basis.

Please only register for either the morning or afternoon session, as spots are limited.

🧅📢 Fundraiser Onion Order Update 📢🧅

Hi everyone! We wanted to share a quick update on the onion fundraiser orders. We have been informed by the farm that delivery is expected sometime this week, and they are working to provide us with an exact delivery date as soon as possible. At this time, we are anticipating orders arriving before Friday, though the final delivery date is still being confirmed due to freight transportation delays.

We know many of you are excited to receive your orders, and we truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this process. We will continue to keep everyone updated and will post pickup information as soon as the delivery date is confirmed.

We’re proud to share that our very own FACS Agent, Michelle Quick, was recently featured in the latest UGA Extension Nutrition and Health: Diabetes Blog.

In the agent highlight, Michelle shares insights from her career with UGA Extension, highlighting her work as both a Registered Dietitian and Registered Yoga Teacher, and her passion for helping individuals and communities improve their health and well-being.

Michelle Quick, MS, RDN, LD, is the Glynn County Extension Coordinator and Family and Consumer Sciences Extension agent for Glynn and McIntosh counties. Read on to learn more about Michelle’s passion for well-being, stress management, yoga, and nutrition.

Highway 82 Fire – Cause Information

We’ve seen questions about the cause of the Highway 82 Fire, and we understand why it may seem unexpected.

The Georgia Forestry Commission conducts thorough wildfire investigations, and in this case, our investigators have clear evidence that the fire was caused by a Mylar balloon coming into contact with a power line, creating an electrical arc that ignited surrounding vegetation.

While this may sound unusual, it is a well-documented type of ignition that has occurred in other areas of the country and conditions.

Because this remains an active investigation while the fire is ongoing, we are not able to release investigative materials at this time.

We encourage those who are interested to learn more about how these types of incidents can occur. Understanding wildfire causes is an important part of prevention.

Our focus remains on supporting the ongoing response and protecting communities.
