Darien Downtown Development Authority

Darien Downtown Development Authority The Darien Downtown Development Authority is a decision making and project driven entity that plans and manages the Darien downtown district.

The DDDA Board meets at 5:30pm on the 1st Tuesday of every month at City Hall.

Thank you to everyone who helped make yesterday’s T-Mobile visit a resounding success! I appreciate how each of you extended a warm Darien welcome while we toured the town. Our guests enjoyed ice-cream samples from the Local Exchange, chocolate samples from Sugar Marsh and were even treated to fresh baked cookies at Open Gates. Everywhere we visited, our guests were greeted with gratitude for their generous gift to our community, interesting background stories about Darien and their businesses and engaging conversation. They enjoyed themselves so much it was hard to keep them on schedule!

I’d also like to thank Ken and Maggie at Skippers for allowing us to take over the porch for lunch. It’s not easy to serve 16 guests who arrive at the same time, but they really pulled it off. Of course, the local seafood was also a bit hit!

I was so proud to see every local government agency represented at the check signing with every member of the City Council and Darien Downtown Development Authority in attendance along with members of the County Commission, IDA and Chamber of Commerce along with several residents and business owners.

I am certain our efforts to roll out the red carpet and show T-Mobile the true spirit of Darien and McIntosh County will help make us a premiere candidate for future grants!

I've attached a video from very own Mayor Pro Tem Lotson.

T-Mobile released their national press release this morning announcing the names of the 25 grant recipients this quarter. I am very pleased to announce that Darien is on that list and will receive $50k! This money will be used to update all signage and add street lights, benches and trash receptacles throughout downtown.

T-Mobile is investing $25 million dollars in small towns like ours throughout the United States. We are only 1 of 2 small Georgia towns to have received this grant. If we make a good impression on the T-Mobile reps , they may help us win more grant monies with their employee referrals.

The T-Mobile team will be arriving in Darien at noon on Thursday and I will be escorting our guests on a tour through downtown. The check presentation is scheduled for 4:00pm on Thursday afternoon in the Waterfront Park. Everyone is invited. Please try to come and support our town and show your enthusiasm to T-Mobile for this very generous gift!

These pictures of the sign, lamp post and bench are examples of what the grant awarded to the Darien Downtown Development Authority will be used for downtown. This historical style is similar with the business way-finding and Welcome to Darien signs that are already in place. The goal is to highlight downtown Darien's historical architecture and encourage residents and visitors alike to experience all the many cultural experiences Darien has to offer.

Everyone is invited to the check presentation that will take place on December 14th at 4:00pm at Waterfront Park. All attendees will will be featured in future advertisement for the company who provided the grant. The name of this company will revealed in a national press release on December 12th. Stay tuned!

Today’s the day to light our new tree! This tree was sponsored by the Darien Downtown Development Authority and is 33’ tall. We will be lighting it following our parade, which starts at 6pm. Spots are still available and accept last minute sign ups at the line up in the Todd Grant parking lot.

For breakfast, lunch, or a delicious coffee, the Shanty Cafe in Downtown Darien is a treat to locals and visitors alike. And yes—they will be open late for Joyful in Darien this Sunday with plenty of hot drinks to keep you warm and cozy as you watch the parade, peruse local shops, and experience the tree lighting!

The Darien Downtown Development Authority has secured a grant which will be advertised in a national press release on December 12th. This This is a very well know national company that could really help draw lots of visitors to our area with the right coverage. Darien will be featured with statements, pictures and a video. All the local media will also be notified on the 12th including radio stations, television, social media and press. We have been asked not to mention the name of the company or the grant program until after the press release.

There will also be a check presentation on December 14th at 4:00pm, at the Darien Waterfront Docks and Park that should last no more than 30 minutes. Everyone is invited to attend!

This grant was awarded to upgrade signage throughout the downtown area, add benches, lighting and trash receptacles. The DDA has been working with the City to add and replace signage with a more historical look. We would like honor Darien’s rich history while preserving its unique historic elements thus creating a true sense of place. We believe that upgrading these elements will be help enhance the beautiful historic architecture throughout downtown Darien while providing better lighting, resting places for patrons and keep the city cleaner with trash receptacles. All signs, including traffic signs, will be replaced with the black powder coated posts and new sign blades. The lamp posts will look very similar to those that are in Vernon Square and the benches are colonial styled. This project will be implemented on both sides of Hwy 17, from Vernon Square to Broad, Screven and First Streets.

Please make every effort to attend and spread the word. The bigger bang we make, the more bucks we can bring to Darien and McIntosh with future grants!
