DANGEROUS HEAT

With heat index values likely to exceed 105° today, it's no surprise that we have a Heat Advisory going into effect at 11 am. Limit your time outside and at a minimum, take frequent breaks and stay hydrated!

Join us for a very special free, online event on Saturday, June 11, at 6 PM EDT! McIntosh County, Georgia, has a rich and complex history, and researching the history of its families can be fascinating, frustrating, and very rewarding, all at the same time. This event will focus upon researching the roots and branches of African American family lines found among Coastal Georgians with ties to Butler Island Plantation. Butler Island Plantation was home to those enslaved and in some cases SOLD AWAY in 1859 at the LARGEST SLAVE SALE documented in U.S. history. This historic event is often referenced as, "The Weeping Times."
Many African Americans are unaware of deep personal ties to this historic sale of enslaved people and the plantation which held their ancestors in bo***ge. Learn more about this history and the people enslaved at this historic landmark. This is your opportunity to engage with researchers who have deep personal ties or have spent years digging into the region's records. There will be presentations followed by a Q&A session to ask your most pressing questions regarding your specific lines and research.
Follow the Friends of Preserve Butler Island page (https://www.facebook.com/ButlerIslandCoalition) to watch via Facebook Live or visit the website to register to attend via Zoom: https://preservebutlerisland.org/.

The Blue-N-Hall public courtesy dock on the North River in McIntosh County near Darien will undergo repairs Tuesday, June 7, 2022, until approximately Saturday, June 11, 2022, and temporary closures to the adjacent boat ramp may be necessary during the repair period.

The Coastal Resources Division of the Georgia Department of Natural Resources is replacing the fixed and floating docks and associated pilings. The docks were damaged during Hurricane Irma in 2017.

Coastal Pines Technical College is doing a community needs assessment to evaluate programs they are offering as well as make plans for additional programs to fit the needs of the business community in the area they serve. We know the labor market is an issue, but to address those issues, they need input from our local Darien businesses.

Please use the link below to complete a SHORT survey to help them identify the gaps in programming. Please forward this survey to additional businesses you believe should contribute.

Here's the link to the online Survey:
https://darienmcintoshcountychamber.growthzoneapp.com/ap/r/9ae041d728534fe98e36402bb4cb8772

The Chamber indicates that the collection of this data will be used to implement programming in our area. We need it to fit the needs of the business community. Please take just a few moments now to complete the survey.

Thank you for your help!

The view is back! A big shout out to Jarriel Lawns and Skippers management for trimming back the bushes and opening up the view at the Oyster Bar. Jarriel wasted no time in giving us back our view after clearance from DNR and approval from the Skippers management team. Think I'll head over for some of their delicious spicey peel and eat shrimp this afternoon and enjoy the view!

Many, very cool things happening inside! While digging pits that will eventually be the concrete footers for the steel supports, they found these fascinating layers that show so much history, most notably when the Strain burned. Thank goodness those thick tabby walls saved the building from complete ruin. We have hired a company to photograph and document all the historic and archeological aspects of the project.

NATIONAL SMALL BUSINESS WEEK - May 1st through May 7th
Recognizing their outstanding service, innovation, and development, Small Business Week celebrates small business owners around the country. Small businesses account for half of America’s workforce, and more new jobs come from small businesses than any other source. They are vital to keeping America running.

And shopping small isn’t a once-a-year event; It’s a year-round necessity. When our small businesses thrive, our communities thrive. Small business include the traditional brick-and-mortar customer and the online shopper.

The week puts small businesses in the spotlight and encourages everyone to shop local and small. It’s a great way to get to know your neighborhood and how it’s growing and evolving. That’s one of the benefits is shopping small too! You know your dollars will stay local. Small businesses are constantly reinvesting in their communities. They donate to school programs and local organizations. That keeps your money local and makes every dollar you spend in a small business more valuable.

Capt. Marty Collins is a lifelong fisherman from Mclntosh County. Born in his family's home on St
Andrews Cemetery Road, and a graduate of MCA in 1983, he spent many years as a resident of Mclntosh
County. He and his wife, Billie Jean, raised their children here. He is the father to Clarissa, Amanda, and Rudy. He also thinks of Ronnie Shaw, Michael and Simone Younce as his kids from where he raised them
to be men on the back deck of shrimp boats. While sh*****ng is his passion, Marty's favorite title is
"Papa" to his grandchildren Alex, Layton, Tucker, and Wyatt.

His childhood summers he was a striker for his father "Capt. Crab" Collins on the back deck of
the Warlock starting at 8 years old. It wasn't until he was 10 years old, that Captain Jack Gale would
offer him his first full share as a deck hand on the Neta G. Born and breed in commercial fishing, Marty
would go on to become a captain of his first trawler at 16 years old.

He has fished from Virginia to Texas, making many friends along the way. He credits much of
knowledge to the "old heads" of sh*****ng to include; Henry "Skippy" Skipper, Speedy, Ricky Skinner,
and his brother Charlie Collins. He has brought several boats to the Darien River Bridge to be blessed to
include: Fran and Betty, Pay Dirt, Capt. Jack, Capt. Zack, Amazing Grace, and the Forgiven. His largest
captained vessel to date is the Amazing Grace out of Darien, Ga coming in at over 100 feet. His heart will
always belong to the Forgiven, his favorite vessel. Only leaving it to run his current vessel Lady Denise, at the request of the late Denise Miller, a 97 ft vessel out of the Sapelo Shrimp Company for Mr. Nixon Miller.
