Fire Truck Friday!
Today we profile Darien Tanker/Tender T231. Built and delivered in 1996 by US Tank - Burlington WI this was ( and still is )a “bad boy on the street” of its day.
You must realize that prior to this era most tankers were often used milk trucks that were mostly worn out and then modified for the fire service. They usually had tanks with no baffles (which prevent sloshing of the water and can prevent roll overs). They almost always had manual transmissions with 13 or more gears, usually missing a few gears. No cabinets, no pumps, often filled by pulling under a pipe at the water tower or station. The firefighters built and repaired them themselves.
Now, realize that from the 1950’s till 2000’s. Large barn fires, filled with cows, hay and straw were a common incident several times a year in every departments district. Anything that could haul water was needed.
Darien was no different and operated a used 3500 gallon milk truck with a 13 speed, no baffles and not the perfect design. During a fire the transmission gave out. It was done.
T231 was ordered. Fixing all those issues. Built on a Peterbilt 357 chassis with a Cat 3406 14.6 engine, proper weight distribution and tires, Allison automatic transmission, cabinetry to hold all necessary equipment and a little bling. Most importantly, a new 4000 gallon stainless steel fully baffled tank with triple water dump chutes off the back. Yep a welcome site to see when you have a rural fire and you need water.
Over it’s 30 year lifetime, we have updated the warning lights, replaced the suspension and added a pump to the rear to transfer water when needed or fight a grass fire. As you can see T231 has been loved. Gets a bath after every use and once a week if it needs it or not! Engineer Denny Dutton’s favorite by far, he lovingly looks after his baby!
Every truck does have its issues. The stainless steel tank has cracked and resulting in leaks with increasing frequency and recently had major repairs just to patch it up. But for now it’s doing its job. 30 years is a long time and it has served well!
