We are coming up on our busy season for responses to MVAs, also known as Motor Vehicle Accidents. In the next few months, our department will be heavily focusing on training our full time staff along with Paid on call personnel in Vehicle Extrication. When it comes to extrication, minutes and even seconds count.

With that being said, we are asking our communities if they have any cars they are willing to donate to the fire department for our continuous training. We would be extremely thankful and be sure to get the most potential out of the use.

Please reach out to us via Facebook comment or Messenger if you have any questions or vehicles to donate. You can also call the Darien Fire Department at 262-882-4620!

Congratulations to James Buchanan VI, the son of Darien Captain James Buchanan V, on his graduation from Big Foot High School with honors. James will be leaving on June 30th to start his journey serving in the United States Navy. We thank James for his contributions to the departments of Darien and Sharon, and wish him the best on his further endeavors!

Also, thank you to Captain Buchanan’s wonderful Fiancé Heather for preparing a delicious meal in celebration and sharing with our duty crew today! Darien and Sharon aren’t just fire departments, we are a family!

Darien Fire & EMS was dispatched to a fully engulfed vehicle fire on I-43 north bound at mile marker 13.

Responding with MED391,T232,E231,T231 and Sharon T403 with 8 personnel. Traffic was briefly stopped until the fire was controlled. Once controlled quickly reopened to one lane while overhaul was performed. Vehicle was total loss and no injuries reported.

SAFETY NOTE: The vehicle owner was out of the vehicle and standing a safe distance away. Passing motorists were attempting to fight the fully involved fire.

While we note your heroic efforts, this is a very dangerous tactic. Tires blow, fuel leaks and ignites, bumpers and struts can explode, not to mention a fire burning several thousand degrees.

Please make sure everyone’s out. Get far away and off the roadway. Interstate highways are very dangerous especially during an incident as drivers are distracted and smoke covering the roadway. Help is on the way, if you get hurt it just adds more issues to the incident.

Stay safe!

Fire Truck Friday!

Today we profile Darien Tanker/Tender T231. Built and delivered in 1996 by US Tank - Burlington WI this was ( and still is )a “bad boy on the street” of its day.

You must realize that prior to this era most tankers were often used milk trucks that were mostly worn out and then modified for the fire service. They usually had tanks with no baffles (which prevent sloshing of the water and can prevent roll overs). They almost always had manual transmissions with 13 or more gears, usually missing a few gears. No cabinets, no pumps, often filled by pulling under a pipe at the water tower or station. The firefighters built and repaired them themselves.

Now, realize that from the 1950’s till 2000’s. Large barn fires, filled with cows, hay and straw were a common incident several times a year in every departments district. Anything that could haul water was needed.

Darien was no different and operated a used 3500 gallon milk truck with a 13 speed, no baffles and not the perfect design. During a fire the transmission gave out. It was done.

T231 was ordered. Fixing all those issues. Built on a Peterbilt 357 chassis with a Cat 3406 14.6 engine, proper weight distribution and tires, Allison automatic transmission, cabinetry to hold all necessary equipment and a little bling. Most importantly, a new 4000 gallon stainless steel fully baffled tank with triple water dump chutes off the back. Yep a welcome site to see when you have a rural fire and you need water.

Over it’s 30 year lifetime, we have updated the warning lights, replaced the suspension and added a pump to the rear to transfer water when needed or fight a grass fire. As you can see T231 has been loved. Gets a bath after every use and once a week if it needs it or not! Engineer Denny Dutton’s favorite by far, he lovingly looks after his baby!

Every truck does have its issues. The stainless steel tank has cracked and resulting in leaks with increasing frequency and recently had major repairs just to patch it up. But for now it’s doing its job. 30 years is a long time and it has served well!

Do you like trucks? If you like working with a team and want to add some excitement to life - maybe joining our team is in your future. Just message us and we can talk.

Darien and Sharon held two joint fire trainings this month working on fire attack and roof ventilation. The first training was a daytime training held for full-time staff and paid on call members, and the second a night training for full time staff and paid on call members.

Implementing the use of Tower 231, we worked ladder operations and put to use our new Milwaukee battery powered roof saws.

For the interior fire attack training, we used organic materials and also wood donated from local businesses to create a real, live fire. Fire suppression was completed with the use of Tower 231, and personnel on hand-lines in the building.

We would like to thank North Boone Fire District #3 for allowing us to train with their Training Building. We would also like to thank Scott Wood Products and Home Lumber for the donation of materials used.

Trainings like these are crucial for the community and our fire department members. Darien and Sharon paid on call members, along with full time staff are able to train together and work as one! The end goal is always operating as a team!

One team, One mission!

We have alot of this in our first and second due areas and wanted to elaborate further. Please take into consideration when building or buying property or even at your current residence, will a fire truck make it in here? Most of our apparatus are over 10ft tall. With that, help us protect your property by having a large access for our units to respond to your emergency. Also, accurate and appropriate signage for your residence is an enormous help to us. Remember, Every second counts when life and property are in danger.
