Star of the Sea Reserve - DNRT The Reserve is adjacent to - and shares trails with - approximately 60 acres owned by the Dartmouth

DNRT’s Star of the Sea Reserve was extensively mined for sand and gravel and the old gravel pits, with all the top soil gone and excavated down to the water table in spots, is made up of grey birch, scrubby oaks and bayberry, the insectivorous sundew and cranberry growing in the poor soil conditions. In the eastern portion, rushes, orchids and Joe pye w**d indicate some of the wetter areas, along

with cacophonous groups of spring peepers. The Reserve is adjacent to — and shares trails with — approximately 60 owned by the Dartmouth Conservation Commission. This parcel is dominated by oak and beech forest with deciduous wetlands made up of red maple and American holly. The trail system follows an old bridle path, built and used by a farm on Gulf Road, which path was specifically designed to train horses for trail riding. There remains an old stone reinforced causeway leading across the saltmarsh from the woodland to Star of the Sea Drive, including a stone bridge only accessible at low tide.

We are making progress clearing trails after the storm. Here is where we suggest hiking. Please note that even cleared trails are still difficult with deep snow and areas of slush.

We are continuing to clear our trails and thank you for your patience! We are still advising folks to stay off the trails for the time being. If you must go out, please have a buddy, be aware of your surroundings, and make sure you have good pair of snow shoes!A

Our Thanksgiving Gratitude Walk schedule for tomorrow, Wednesday, November 26 has been cancelled due to rain in the forecast. Although we won't be gathering to walk, we ask that you keep a spirit of gratitude over the Thanksgiving holiday.

It's hunting season! Although DNRT does not allow hunting on any of our reserves with trails, some of our properties do abut Town of Dartmouth land, which does allow hunting. For those properties (Destruction Brook Woods, Star of the Sea Reserve, and Frank Knowles/Little River Reserve) we do recommend wearing blaze orange (and it's always a good idea at any wooded property during hunting season).
