Proposed changes to Ordinance 105 could affect how short term rentals are managed across Dauphin Island.

With the public hearing scheduled for Wednesday, August 19 at 5:00 PM, the Dauphin Island Chamber of Commerce has published an overview to help our members and community understand what is being proposed.

The proposal includes:

• Two new overlay districts: STROD4 for DeSoto Landing and STROD5 for Audubon Place
• STR license caps that vary by district
• Grandfathering provisions for existing licenses
• Different minimum stay requirements across the island
• No proposed changes for STROD1, STROD2 and STROD3

We've also included historical context about the role tourism has played in Dauphin Island's development since the 1950s and why these decisions matter to our residential and business communities.

We want your feedback.

Read the overview, review the district maps, and complete the Chamber survey before the public hearing.

Why does shopping local matter? 🏝️

When you choose a locally owned business on Dauphin Island, you’re doing more than making a purchase.

You’re supporting the people who live here, work here, raise their families here, and help make our community what it is.

Every meal at a local restaurant, stay with a local rental company, purchase from a local shop, or service booked with a local business helps keep our community thriving.

Small businesses make a big difference. 💙

DAUPHIN ISLAND PUBLIC SAFETY ADVISORY — SMOKE IN THE AREA

Dauphin Island Public Safety is aware of smoke and a strong smell of smoke across Dauphin Island and the surrounding area this morning.

The smoke is believed to be associated with the Bayou Cumbest wildfire in Jackson County, Mississippi, which has burned several hundred acres. Fire crews and forestry personnel are actively working the incident, and smoke from the fire is expected to linger throughout the region.

At this time, there is no known wildfire threat to Dauphin Island.

Residents and visitors should be aware that smoke may reduce visibility, particularly along roadways. Please use caution while driving and allow additional stopping distance where visibility is limited.

If you see an active fire, flames, or a significant smoke column that appears to be originating on Dauphin Island, call 911 immediately.

Dauphin Island Public Safety will continue to monitor conditions and provide additional information if necessary.

🔴 RED FLAGS are flying today at Dauphin Island beaches.

A Red Flag indicates high surf and dangerous rip current conditions. Entering the Gulf is strongly discouraged. Even experienced swimmers can be caught in powerful, life-threatening rip currents.

💡 Did You Know?

Many people think the Chamber is only for business networking, but we're so much more than that.

The Chamber serves as a connector, advocate, and resource for our entire community. We work behind the scenes to support local businesses, encourage economic growth, welcome new businesses, promote community events, and create opportunities for collaboration.

When a new business opens, we're there to celebrate. When businesses need connections or resources, we're here to help. When our community hosts events, we help spread the word. Every day, we're working to strengthen the place we all call home.

Whether you're a small business owner, nonprofit organization, entrepreneur, or community leader, the Chamber exists to help you build relationships, gain visibility, and become part of a network that's invested in your success.

🇺🇸 It's one of the most exciting weekends of the year on Dauphin Island, and we're thrilled to welcome everyone celebrating with us!

As you enjoy our beaches, local businesses, and beautiful coastal views, we ask for your help in keeping our island safe for everyone.

Please do not set off personal fireworks on the beach. Not only can they be dangerous to families, pets, and nearby homes, but they can also disturb our nesting sea turtles, shorebirds, and other wildlife that call Dauphin Island home.

The best way to celebrate? Gather with friends and family and enjoy the community's official fireworks display. It's a spectacular tradition and the safest way to experience the holiday.

As you celebrate, please remember to:
🎇 Leave fireworks to the professionals.
🏖️ Dispose of trash properly and help keep our beaches clean.
🌊 Stay aware of surf and weather conditions.
🤝 Be courteous to fellow beachgoers and respect our island's natural beauty.

Thank you for helping make Dauphin Island a welcoming place for residents and visitors alike. Have a fun, safe, and happy Fourth of July! ❤️🤍💙
