Mitre Rock Fire Update | Sunday, August 9, 2026

This will be the final written update for the Mitre Creek fire unless fire behavior increases.

Current Situation: The Mitre Rock fire has cooled considerably in the past few days. Yesterday around the fire perimeter, firefighters found only one area of heat within 100 feet of the containment line, which was quickly mitigated. The smoke generated by the Little Giant fire in the Chelan area has blown into the area, resulting in lower temperatures and a more stable atmosphere. Fire managers took advantage of this reprieve in the weather and fire activity to engage a crew of sawyers. They are cutting snags in areas where fire crews are working. Community and firefighter safety remains the highest priority. A night shift monitored fire activity for the Mitre Rock, the Hudspeth, and the Bradeen Hill Fires throughout the evening.

Today’s Activities: The success firefighters have had with containing the Mitre Rock fire, coupled with the milder forecasted weather has prompted fire managers to reallocate some resources to more active fires in the area. Firefighters will continue to patrol the fire area and check for any remaining heat along the perimeter. The perimeter of the fire area is secured, however, smaller isolated pockets of heat may still be present in the fire’s interior.

Weather & Fire Behavior: Smoke from the Little Giant fire will remain in the area for the next few days, which will result in lower temperatures and a more stable atmosphere. Additionally better moisture recovery is projected for the coming weeks, leading to higher relative humidities. Current Situation: The Mitre Rock Fire remains in its current footprint despite a red flag weather warning. Crews are patrolling containment lines, adding depth where needed. Snagging, or felling standing dead, hazard trees to provide for firefighter and public safety, was a big part of the mop-up operations. There is a noticeable decrease in acreage from yesterday’s update. This is a common occurrence as the fire edge cools and resources ground-truth and more accurately map the fire perimeter that was originally mapped by air resources.

Today’s Activities: Firefighters will continue mop-up along the fire perimeter and near structures with much of the work focused near the Westend community. Hot, dry and windy forecasted conditions increase the potential for internal flare ups and increased smoke production. As the weekend begins more people may be traveling in the area, so please slow down, stay alert and be aware of firefighter and emergency vehicles in the area.

Weather & Fire Behavior: A red flag warning has again been issued for today. Temperatures will be in the 90s with relative humidity below 15% in the afternoon. These factors, as well as the potential for increased winds and atmospheric instability, may provide conditions for fire to quickly spread and become difficult to control. The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office is assisting the Clarkston Police Department in the search for missing person John Michael Swett.

Swett’s dark grey, four-door Ford F-350 was located outside of Odessa, WA, on Duck Lake Road. Swett was last heard from on Saturday, August 1st, at approximately 8:00 PM.

Mitre Rock Fire Update | Friday, August 7, 2026

Current Situation: Increased containment percentages for the Mitre Rock Fire are a direct reflection of the excellent progress made by firefighters. Crews finished connecting constructed firelines and natural features yesterday and continued work on the interior of the fire’s footprint to extinguish areas of heat that could potentially threaten containment. Structure preparation and assessment continued in the community of Westend as needed. A “falling module,” or crew of qualified chainsaw operators called “fallers,” felled hazard trees created by the fire to provide firefighters the safety to widen and secure the control line near Fort Spokane.
Today’s Activities: Fire managers will focus mop-up operations in the southeastern corner of the fire along and near Peters Road, in the vicinity of the Westend community. As conditions permit, support by aerial resources will be available to firefighters should they have needs. The red flag warning today may mean an increase in occasional fire flare ups interior of the fire’s edge and more smoke within the fire area. Crews will stay active patrolling the containment line to continue any needed mop up. The Fort Spokane boat ramp and day-use area will be open, per the National Park Service, though the campground will remain closed. Visitors are urged to use caution in the area of the Mitre Rock Fire.

A Red Flag Warning has been issued for our area from 11:00 AM Friday through 11:00 PM Saturday. Critical fire weather is expected with low humidity, dry fuels, and breezy conditions that can cause any fire to spread rapidly.
Please do your part to prevent wildfires:
• Avoid any activity that could create sparks.
• Do not drive or park on dry grass.
• Secure trailer chains so they don’t drag.
• Avoid campfires and outdoor burning.
• Postpone target shooting, fireworks, and yard work that could produce sparks.
If you see smoke or flames, call 911 immediately. Early reporting gives firefighters the best chance to keep a small fire from becoming a major incident.
Our crews, along with firefighters across Eastern Washington, continue to respond to multiple fires. Help us keep new fires from starting by making smart, fire-safe choices this weekend.

Mitre Rock Fire Update

Current Situation: Firefighters made excellent progress yesterday along the northeastern portion of the Mitre Rock Fire. Crews completed a containment line linking Peters Road to the Spokane River, effectively securing that section of the perimeter. Firefighters continued mop-up operations, extinguishing areas of heat near the fire’s perimeter and around structures where needed. Mop-up also progressed along the Fort Spokane side of the fire, with crews patrolling for hot spots that could threaten containment. Numerous “snags,” or standing dead trees, continue to pose safety concerns and slow work in this area, and firefighter safety remains a top priority. Overnight, personnel patrolled and mopped up fire line, increasing containment where possible.

Today’s Activities: Firefighters will continue mop-up along the fire’s perimeter, working to strengthen and add depth to containment lines near the community of Westend. Structure assessment and preparation continue, with fire crews ready to provide point protection if needed. In the Fort Spokane area firefighters will focus on locating and extinguishing interior hotspots that could challenge containment.

Weather & Fire Behavior: Temperatures continue to rise today, with highs in the 90s, and relative humidities again in the teens. Southwest winds will persist today, which will help to move smoke out of the valleys. Increasing temperatures, lower humidity, and heightened atmospheric instability are expected to increase fire activity this afternoon and may test containment lines. Current Situation: Fire managers continued concentrating their efforts on the northeastern corner of the fire, closest to the community of Westend. Homes and buildings within the community were assessed to determine structure protection needs. The community of Westend remained under evacuation yesterday. Firefighters provided point protection for threatened values and brought in additional resources to strengthen containment lines and slow growth of the fire’s perimeter. Overnight, crews stayed in place to monitor conditions and hold the gains made by day-shift personnel, ensuring control lines remained secure.
Today’s Activities: Crews will continue to use direct and indirect suppression strategies, including using natural barriers and constructed containment lines in order to hold the fire within its current footprint. Within the community of Westend, crews will employ point protection where needed. Air resources will be used, when visibility allows, to support suppression efforts on the ground.
