Iowa Harm Reduction Coalition - Quad Cities IHRC works to create health equity in Iowa communities via advocacy, education, and health services.

QC Harm Reduction supports accurate, fact based drug education, drug related illness and injury prevention, as well as effective drug treatment for problematic use. We will continue to support innovative health approaches to drug use, drug treatment, and drug policy based on science and research. We believe that every solution with the potential to promote public health and to mitigate harm should be considered.

We are heartbroken over the devastating loss of so many community members who died or were killed while experiencing homelessness. Each of the people we've lost deserved safety, health care, a safe place to retreat to and lay their head at night, and their humanity to be honored.

This Homeless Persons' Memorial Day, we demand safety nets that prevent homelessness and care for people experiencing homelessness and its many impacts right now. Houseless folks are our neighbors and community members, and we must stand up alongside each other. Sometimes, I get contacted by families who are sick with worry about their loved one’s substance use, like my family once was.

Warmth, connection, care, compassion… this is how you bring people back to the fold. It is important of course to have clearly communicated boundaries and deep care for yourselves, as well.

I hear so many stories in this line of work of why and how people end up in situations that would shatter anyone’s world to pieces. Sometimes it all feels impossible, but miracles can and do happen with Love in the mix. Practical strategies for empowerment to make the best decisions for oneself can and do save lives. Thank you for your support and care.
