Today, we honor the passing of a remarkable partner, K-9 Bajouk, whose service has left an indelible mark on our department and our town. Members of the department joined his handler, Sgt. Joseph Squashic, on his last call.

During his tenure with the Davidson Police Department, K-9 Bajouk became a trusted partner, protector, and invaluable asset to the residents of our community. Early in his career, he became a community favorite, always ready to meet kids, pose at events, wag his tail for strangers, and lean in for more petting. He was gentle, friendly, and beloved; rare traits for a working canine. Yet everyone on the force knew that with one command from his handler, he became a fierce protector.

Throughout his career, Bajouk had many significant accomplishments, including locating illegal narcotics, finding a weapon thrown into a field by a suspect, and locating a missing person who was safely returned home, just to name a few. These were not small feats; they were lifesaving, community-protecting acts.

Today, we remember him not with sadness, but with gratitude. We celebrate an officer who made us all safer, stronger, and more resilient. Bajouk, thank you. May your next life be filled with comfort, rest, and all the affection you deserve. You will always be one of our heroes.

The department would like to express special thanks to Dr. Dick Hay of Total Bond Veterinary Hospital and his team for their generosity, compassion, support, and guidance during this difficult time.

On Tuesday, June 9, during the Board of Commissioners meeting, the Town of Davidson announced the appointment of Austin Nantz as its new Town Manager, effective July 1, 2026. Austin has served as Assistant Town Manager since 2021 and brings nearly 30 years of experience in local government administration, strategic planning, financial management, human resources management, and organizational leadership. Austin will replace Jamie Justice, who is retiring with over 10 years with the Town of Davidson. His retirement is effective June 30.

“We are confident that Austin’s experience, leadership, and collaborative approach are the right fit for the next leader for Davidson,” said Mayor Rusty Knox. “Austin has been instrumental in advancing the Town’s affordable housing initiatives, strengthening financial transparency and budgeting practices, and guiding strategic planning efforts that align departmental operations with the Board’s long-term vision.”

Opportunity for Public Comment on the FY 2027 Manager's Recommended Budget

At the Tuesday, June 9 Town of Davidson, NC Board of Commissioners Meeting, the Board plans to suspend the rules to allow for a public comment period on the FY2027 Budget.

Due to concerns of the NC General Assembly’s law for a constitutional amendment on the ballot for this November that limits local property tax levies in an unidentified and unspecified method that would severely hinder Town of Davidson funding for critical local services such as police, fire, and public works, House Bill 1089 / SL 2026-5 (2025-2026 Session) - North Carolina General Assembly, the Board of Commissioners discussed the potential for increasing the recommended tax rate for additional revenue towards funding the proposed Fire Station #1 in FY 2027 rather than FY 2028 as originally planned.

Persons wishing to address the Board of Commissioners will register on a sign-up sheet stationed by the meeting room door. Prior to beginning the public comment period, the Mayor will collect the sign-up sheet and recognize speakers in the order that they registered. Speakers will address the Board of Commissioners from the podium and special accommodations will be made for persons with a disability with appropriate advanced notice to the Town Clerk. Speakers will be asked to identify themselves for the record and shall be limited to a maximum time of three (3) minutes.

If you are unable to attend, please email questions or comments to [email protected].
