EERDG had a popular table at the 2025 Tallahassee Science Festival! We brought lots of creatures including corn snakes, glowing scorpions, earthworms, and blue beetles to our local community. This year we added a trivia wheel with questions related to our research and hand-drawn sticker creations as prizes.

Last term EERDG plant people gave a guest lecture at a 3rd grade classroom in Wakulla! Equipped with a cart full of example plants and experiments we loved talking about photosynthesis. The third graders were most excited about a plant guessing game that illustrated just how much plants have been changed by humans (made by our very own EE graduate student Josh Rowe)!

EERDG had a popular table at the annual Tallahassee science festival in October! We showed off the local flora and fauna with live snakes, scorpions, and bugs, plus samples from the FSU collection of preserved birds. Kids were so excited to pet the corn snake and see a bark scorpion glow!

What a great year of participating in the Scientist in Every Florida School program! We loved teaching students from all around Florida about ecology and evolution, and hope to see you all again next year. A huge shoutout to all our amazing EE graduate student volunteers who helped with the virtual visits and to our fantastic EERDG Outreach Coordinator, Alexa Guerrera, for organizing these fun events!

EERDG and TCGA had a successful "How to Read Scientific Papers" workshop this evening! We talked all things flies and animal behavior with FSU undergraduates. Building a sense of belonging within our scientific community is an important goal of ours, and we are excited to continue working with our bright and curious students. Thank you to the graduate students who helped out! We are looking forward to next week's discussion on how environmental predictability and risk affect mating decisions!

Another day, another great afternoon teaching kindergarteners how to make scientific observations! Our efforts have now reached two counties in FL! A big thank you to Scientists in Every Florida School (SEFS) for coordinating yet another amazing visit. And thank you to our volunteers: Rachael, Aaron, Tyler, Monica, and April!

At the end of the day, it's just a couple of kids in the 20th+ grade discussing animals and plants with kids in the 0th grade! :)

EERDG Outreach had a splendid time exploring the wonderful world of biology with kindergarteners today! We chatted with two kindergarten classrooms about scientific observation. These students did an awesome job of describing all of the intricate ways in which animals and plants can interact with each other and their environments! Our favorite part was seeing all of the fantastic drawings of sea creatures each student made! This was certainly a bright spot in the strange year that is 2020! A special thanks to Scientists in Every Florida School - Thompson Earth Systems Institute for arranging this meeting. We also want to thank the two teachers who made this opportunity possible; we truly appreciate all of their efforts!

Meet FSU Ecology and Evolution PhD student Ethan Cissell !

Here’s what Ethan has to share about research: “I am fascinated by the most ubiquitous predators on the planet: viruses that infect bacteria, called bacteriophages. My research focuses on the factors that mediate the viral decision to either aid or kill their hosts in cyanobacterial mats on coral reefs, as well as the ecosystem-scale consequences of the outcome of this decision-making.”

And here’s Ethan’s tip for adding more science to your life: “I think following social media accounts and blogs of diverse scientists is a great and digestible way to learn about a lot of different kinds of science, and a great opportunity to find citizen science opportunities to help advance research.”

Do you have questions about how the Biology department's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC) functions? DEIC was created to facilitate, support, and effectively communicate ongoing DE&I efforts within our department. Anyone can be involved with DEIC. Below is a concise flow-through chart outlining the suggested path to take if you have ideas for promoting DE&I within our department (whether you want to get DEIC involved or not)! To improve transparency, both an annual report and a list of ongoing projects will be sent out in the near future. Please be on the look out for those. Questions? Email [email protected].

Please feel free to share this chart with grad groups, undergrads, faculty, staff, etc.
