"Our student chapter promotes the professional success of future engineers. We actively participate in representing our university at major civil engineering competitions such as the Concrete Canoe Competition, Steel Bridge Competition, and the Environmental Project. Through these projects, we give students the chance to work in teams and gain more hands-on knowledge about engineering. In order to
provide the students with further insights about the engineering profession outside the realm of academics, we also hold company presentations where professionals share their experiences and answer the students’ questions. By providing these opportunities, our chapter creates well-rounded engineers who are better prepared for the work force." General Meetings
These meetings allow members recieve updates regarding ASCE sponsored events, ASCE competition teams, the UC Davis Engineering Joint Council, and other pertinent ASCE information. Members are also served dinner and have the opportunity to listen to a civil engineering company presentation. Firms of all the disciplines of civil engineering (Environmental, Water Resources, Geotechnical, Structural, and Transportation) will be presenting at some point during the year, so check the calendar for details regarding meeting specifics. A raffle is held after the company presentation. Time permitting, members are welcome to ask presenters questions regarding their work. Social Events
ASCE social events are a great way to unload some of the stress that all engineering students experience during their college years. Social events include ski trips, BBQ's, bowling nights, movie nights, E-ball, and much more. They are also a great way to develop lasting relationships with fellow engineers. Tours
Each year, ASCE at UCD sponsors several exclusive tours that allow members to experience civil engineering infrastructure first-hand. Tours are led by engineering professionals and last anywhere from a few hours to the entire day. Previous tours have included, but were not limited to, the New Oakland-San Franscisco Bay Bridge (Caltrans), the Granite Construction Concrete Plant (Granite Construction), and the Folsom Lake Spillway Project. Companies usually allow our members access to restricted areas of the project so we can see all the engineering work that is being done up close and personal. Community Service
Part of the ASCE mission statement is to "serve the public good." Following this philosophy, ASCE at UCD sponsors one or two public service events each year to give back to the Davis community. We try to structure these events so that some aspect of engineering is included into our service. With the help of civil engineering honor society Chi Epsilon, ASCE members renovated the pathways in Central Park in Downtown Davis. Workshops
One of the goals of ASCE at UCD is to prepare members for a long and successful career in the field of civil engineering. In light of this, ASCE hosts several workshops during the academic year. Our resume workshop includes a presentation by area engineering firms on what they look for in a perspective employee's resume. Members also have the opportunity to work one-on-one with professionals to improve their resume to make themselves more marketable. Our Professors Panel allows members to join in a group discussion with several UC Davis Civil Engineering Professors. These panels are designed to help students get a feel for which discipline of Civil Engineering they would like to work in after they graduate.
