“Thompson’s Perspective” - letter to the Davis Enterprise supporting Congressman Mike Thompson's reelection to Congress -
"There are many reasons to re-elect Rep. Mike Thompson, but as a retired reservist and Afghanistan veteran, I value his lived experience as a military veteran.
Despite President Trump’s campaign promises to “end forever wars”, he has now grown enamored with using the military instrument of power – at sea, in Latin America, Africa and the Middle East.
Now in Iran, we are seeing the limitations of military power. We’ve hit a stalemate with no options to forcibly reopen the Strait of Hormuz or seize Iran’s nuclear materials. Serious questions must be asked about whether the U.S. was prepared for this conflict and what it means for future conflicts.
Congressman Thompson served in uniform as an instrument of U.S. foreign policy. He has a soldier’s perspective on the appropriate use of the military to achieve our policy objectives, its strengths, costs and limitations. In addition to his forceful opposition to the Iran War, he also voted against the 2003 U.S. invasion of Iraq.
I attended the Congressman Thompson’s “No Forever Wars” rally in Woodland right after President Trump started bombing Iran. I have talked with him regarding our shared concerns about escalating this conflict, which has unclear objectives and no realistic military solution.
We have more than two years left with President Trump, and no reason to think that he will slow down militarily. We need the perspective of veterans like Congressman Thompson to hold the Trump Administration accountable for military overreach, and for effectively managing our military.
