The UC Davis Library celebrates the life of Joanne (Dickenson) DePuy, founder of Wine Tours International and a key player in the Paris Wine Tasting of 1976, which put California wine on the global map. DePuy passed away on June 29, 2026, at the age of 98.

DePuy’s professional papers and photographs, which tell the story of Napa Valley during the wine boom in the 1970s, are held in our Archives and Special Collections.

A toast to Beaulieu Vineyard on the opening of their newly renovated hospitality center this week! The clothes may have changed. The science of winemaking has evolved. But BV remains an indelible part of Napa Valley history.

Learn more about BV’s 125+ years as one of Napa’s longest-standing and most widely recognized wineries in our online exhibit: Vintage Beaulieu: https://library.ucdavis.edu/exhibit/vintage-beaulieu/

We are pleased to announce that Rikki Brown, Ph.D. candidate at UC Santa Cruz, has been selected as our 2026 Spurrier-Winiarski Wine Writer-in-Residence.

During her residency , Brown will use the library's extensive wine collections to further her research on the relationship between Georgia, a lesser-known -- but no less historic -- European wine country, and winemaking regions in the United States.

We are delighted that UC Davis Library Leadership Board Chair Michael E. “Mike” Gilson ’73 has been named the recipient of the 2026 Charles J. Soderquist Award!

The Soderquist Award is named after an esteemed alum and entrepreneur and recognizes individuals who, like Charles, have given back to UC Davis through philanthropy, volunteerism and leadership.

The award includes $10,000 that the recipient can grant to a university area of their choice. It is fitting that Mike is donating his prize to the library's Student Success Initiative — he is the embodiment of Aggie Pride and a tireless champion for UC Davis students and the library, for which we are grateful. 💙 💛

Congratulations, Mike!

Please join us on Wednesday, May 13 at Shields Library for a special screening of the indie comedy "Bottle Shock," starring Alan Rickman, Chris Pine, Bill Pullman, with a supporting role by UC Davis for its wine expertise! 🍷 🤩

It's the perfect movie to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris Wine Tasting, so save a seat (and room for popcorn)!

Elizabeth McQueen, assistant professor of theatre studies at Florida State University and host of the Esculent podcast, will introduce the film. There will also be a pop-up display of items from our Food and Wine Collections that tells the real story behind the 1976 blind tasting that put California wine on the global map.

It’s the centennial of America’s most famous highway, Route 66, and we’re revved up about our new exhibit: “Celebrating 100 Years of the Mother Road: Route 66."

Select materials from our Archives and Special Collections Department explore Route 66’s nostalgia, both celebratory and complex — from road trip adventures and diner recommendations to westward travel for migrant farm workers and Black motorists.

The Route 66 exhibit is located in the Shields Library lobby, to the left of the main stairwell, and will be on display through August 19.
