We are delighted that UC Davis Library Leadership Board Chair Michael E. “Mike” Gilson ’73 has been named the recipient of the 2026 Charles J. Soderquist Award!

The Soderquist Award is named after an esteemed alum and entrepreneur and recognizes individuals who, like Charles, have given back to UC Davis through philanthropy, volunteerism and leadership.

The award includes $10,000 that the recipient can grant to a university area of their choice. It is fitting that Mike is donating his prize to the library's Student Success Initiative — he is the embodiment of Aggie Pride and a tireless champion for UC Davis students and the library, for which we are grateful. 💙 💛

Congratulations, Mike!

Please join us on Wednesday, May 13 at Shields Library for a special screening of the indie comedy "Bottle Shock," starring Alan Rickman, Chris Pine, Bill Pullman, with a supporting role by UC Davis for its wine expertise! 🍷 🤩

It's the perfect movie to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Judgment of Paris Wine Tasting, so save a seat (and room for popcorn)!

Elizabeth McQueen, assistant professor of theatre studies at Florida State University and host of the Esculent podcast, will introduce the film. There will also be a pop-up display of items from our Food and Wine Collections that tells the real story behind the 1976 blind tasting that put California wine on the global map.

It’s the centennial of America’s most famous highway, Route 66, and we’re revved up about our new exhibit: “Celebrating 100 Years of the Mother Road: Route 66."

Select materials from our Archives and Special Collections Department explore Route 66’s nostalgia, both celebratory and complex — from road trip adventures and diner recommendations to westward travel for migrant farm workers and Black motorists.

The Route 66 exhibit is located in the Shields Library lobby, to the left of the main stairwell, and will be on display through August 19.

Patience, precision and the right tools are a must when it comes to repairing and preserving books and other research materials in our collections.

In celebration of Preservation Week, Preservation and Conservation Specialist Jennifer Jouas-Viall is sharing her go-to tools — the ones she reaches for most often in the library’s Preservation Lab. Some may surprise you!

We're closing out National Library Week with a new Aggie exhibition in Shields Library!

Located on the north wall of Shields 150 (first floor, east wing), “The Past in Practice: Interpreting the Ancient World” presents final projects from three classes taught by Professor of Classics Bianca Hand.

Students created original works, including mixed media, ceramics, paintings and sculptures, that apply ancient material culture to their own identities and contemporary concerns.

The exhibit will be on display through spring quarter. Check it out the next time you're visiting Shields!

On this 10th anniversary of Give Day, we invite you to support welcoming and inspiring student spaces with a gift to the UC Davis Library Annual Fund.

We recently gave Aggie-themed makeovers to eight group study rooms at Shields Library, thanks in part to the generosity of Give Day donors. The rooms, which had been purely functional, are now engaging and inviting to students — spaces they seek out to collaborate and explore their brightest ideas, together.

Stop by Shields on Picnic Day to explore the rooms and find your favorite theme — will it be Aggie Traditions, University Farm, Unitrans, Bike, Arboretum, Egghead, Shields Library or Water Tower?

Bringing Aggie spirit to our group study rooms is just one example of how we are reimagining the library a a “third space” — beyond home and the classroom — where students can come together and find community, connection and belonging.
