The Probate Court, a division of the Montgomery County Court of Common Pleas, is a trial court with limited jurisdiction as granted by the Ohio Revised Code. The Probate Court has exclusive jurisdiction over the administration of estates and trusts, appointment of guardians for incompetents and estates of minors, adoptions, issuance of marriage licenses, name changes, commitment of the mentally il

l and various other actions. The court also approves settlements in wrongful death actions and minor injury actions. The Probate Court is empowered with more than 200 responsibilities pursuant to the Ohio Revised Code.

Today, Montgomery County Probate Court is wearing purple in recognition of World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. πŸ’œ

Elder abuse, neglect and exploitation can take many forms, and too often, the warning signs go unnoticed or unreported. As a Court that works with guardianships and matters involving vulnerable adults, we understand the importance of awareness, protection and dignity for older adults in Montgomery County, Ohio .

Wearing purple is one way we stand with our county partners in helping shine a light on this important issue.

Join us in welcoming Sariah to the Montgomery County Probate Court!

Sariah is a recent graduate of Centerville High School and is completing a summer internship with YouthWorks Montgomery County, Ohio. YouthWorks offers students an opportunity to gain real-world experience for life after high school.

During her time here, Sariah will explore various sections of the court and the daily operations of each.

This fall, she will be attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville and majoring in Public Affairs. She aspires to be a medical malpractice attorney.

Thank you Ohio Supreme Court for inviting me to present the work that Probate Court, Montgomery County, Ohio, Montgomery County Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services, Eastway Behavioral Healthcare and South Community Behavioral Health has done in implementing a court program for monitoring those with serious mental illness in the community.

There were about 100 folks, including judges, social workers, county administrators, and others from across Ohio learning what we did to preserve medical beds for those that need them. There are not enough beds to treat, so this is the solution until we find more beds.

Our court literally wrote the book on this real solution which is now available on the Supreme Court of Ohio’s website: https://www.supremecourt.ohio.gov/docs/JCS/courtSvcs/resources/AOTProgram.pdf.

We also had a large part in changing the law so other courts can safely implement these programs.
