🐾 Planning to attend a committal service?

Out of respect for the families we serve—and for the safety and well-being of your pets—we ask that visitors not bring pets to committal services. Only trained service dogs, as defined by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), are permitted during services.

Military funeral honors include the firing of a rifle volley and the sounding of Taps. The sudden, high-intensity noise from the rifle volley can be harmful to a pet’s highly sensitive hearing and may cause pain, fear, anxiety, or unpredictable behavior. Even calm, well-behaved pets can become startled by the gunfire, creating a safety concern for themselves, their handlers, and those attending the service.

A committal service is a solemn ceremony honoring a Veteran’s life and military service. Leaving pets at home helps preserve the peaceful and dignified atmosphere families deserve while protecting your furry companion from unnecessary stress and potential hearing injury.

Thank you for helping us maintain a safe, respectful, and dignified environment for the families who have entrusted us with honoring their loved ones, and for helping protect the well-being of your pets.

VA Police will be locking the North Liscum and Gettysburg vehicle gates at 8:00 p.m. every day, and unlocking them at 5:00 a.m.
The South Liscum gate (close to 35) will remain open 24/7.

Today, we proudly celebrate 250 years of American independence. As our nation marks this historic milestone, we honor the enduring ideals of liberty, democracy, and service that have shaped the United States since 1776.

At Dayton National Cemetery, we are privileged to care for the final resting place of generations of Veterans who answered our nation’s call—from the earliest defenders of our nation to those who have served in more recent conflicts. Their courage, sacrifice, and unwavering commitment have safeguarded the freedoms we cherish today.

As you celebrate our nation’s 250th birthday with family and friends, we invite you to take a moment to remember those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice in defense of our country. Their legacy lives on through the freedoms we enjoy and the nation they helped preserve.

The following outlines Memorial Day weekend events taking place at the Dayton National Cemetery. We warmly encourage our Veterans, their families, and community members to attend, and invite volunteers to join us on the days specified below. Please consider helping us this Memorial Day weekend! Your presence and support help ensure that the sacrifices of our nation’s heroes are never forgotten.

Friday May 22, 2026 (VOLUNTEERS NEEDED)
Placement of the Avenue of Flags (large American and state flags). Meet outside the Administrative Office’s front entrance (4400 W. Third St. Dayton, OH) at 8:00 am. Work continues until all (≈270) flags are placed

BACKGROUND: The Avenue of Flags flanks both sides of the curb line throughout the cemetery with flags mounted at grade in support sleeves. The Avenue of Flags is a patriotic feature at a veteran’s cemetery and reinforces patriotism, national pride and represents a visible, bold and proud display of flags. At the Dayton National Cemetery, the flags are donated by the families of the interred Veterans for display along the Avenue of Flags. The Avenue of Flags is only flown on Memorial Day weekend.

Saturday May 23, 2026 (Volunteers Welcome)
Scouts Grave Decorating Ceremony begins at 9:30 am and takes place in the tent atop Monument Hill in the cemetery. Placement of small U.S. flags by local scouting organizations and volunteers begins after the ceremony.

Monday May 25, 2026 Memorial Day
Memorial Day ceremony starts at 11:00 am and takes place in the tent atop Monument Hill in the cemetery.

NOTE: The cemetery will be closed to traffic until 1:00 pm on this day. Parking is available in the lots on Connecticut and Maine Avenues on the VA Campus (see map in the comments) and shuttles will take attendees to/from the ceremony location (or it’s a short walk for those not wishing to utilize the shuttle).

Tuesday May 26, 2026 (VOLUNTEERS NEEDED)
Avenue of Flags and small grave flags pick-up. Meet outside Administrative Office’s front entrance at 8:00 am. Work continues until all (≈270 large and 63K+ small gravesite) flags are removed. Many volunteers are needed for this undertaking.
