There’s a lot to be proud of in Dayton.

Every day, City employees are working throughout our community. We're maintaining our streets and parks, keeping the lights on, providing safe and reliable water, responding when storms come through, and doing the countless other jobs behind the scenes that help keep Dayton moving.

But what makes Dayton special goes far beyond the work of City government. It’s the neighbors who look out for one another, the businesses that invest in our community, the families who call Dayton home, and the people who care deeply about the future of our city.

As another busy week comes to a close, we simply want to say thank you to our employees and to the citizens we have the privilege of serving.

We’re proud to call Dayton home.

đź’§ City of Dayton Utility Update

The City of Dayton is aware of recent questions and discussion in the community regarding the City's water and wastewater utilities. We want to provide residents with clear and accurate information about the current status of these public utilities.

The City of Dayton continues to own and operate its utilities. No decision has been made to sell the City's water or wastewater systems.

Tennessee-American Water previously approached the City with a proposal regarding the purchase of the water and wastewater systems. Discussions regarding that proposal are currently paused while the City completes a comprehensive water and wastewater rate study. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the systems and help ensure that rates appropriately support their continued operation and long-term needs.

The City is not experiencing financial distress, and the rate study is not being conducted because the City is unable to operate its utilities. The City remains committed to responsible financial management and to making decisions that protect the long-term interests of our residents and utility customers.

We also want to address questions concerning Nokian Tyres. Nokian Tyres pays the City's established rates for its water and wastewater services. The company does not receive free water or wastewater service from the City.

No decision has been made to sell the City's water or wastewater systems. The City Council's responsibility is to carefully evaluate all matters affecting these utilities and act in the best interest of the City, its residents, and utility customers. Any proposed sale would ultimately require a public referendum, meaning the final decision would rest with the citizens of Dayton.

Residents and utility customers may have recently received information from the Utility Workers Union of America (UWUA) regarding this issue. UWUA is not seeking to purchase the City's utilities. The organization represents utility workers and has expressed its opposition to a potential sale.

We understand that Dayton's public utilities are important to our residents and customers and that questions about their future deserve clear answers. The City will continue to provide accurate information as the rate study and evaluation process move forward.

At this time, Dayton's utilities remain owned and operated by the City of Dayton, no sale has been approved, and no sale can occur without the people having a voice in that decision through a referendum.
