Cindy spent 22 years as a college counselor, helping students navigate systems and paperwork. When her mother died and her older brother Kevin suddenly needed to live on his own at 69, those skills became a lifeline. She found him an apartment, co-signed utilities, and helped him apply for SNAP. "It takes a lot of courage to fill out social service documents," she says. She had that courage. Kevin is learning to have it too.

Kevin, now 74, has been on SNAP since 2019. At his peak, during COVID, he received over $200 a month. Now he receives about $48 — a drop Cindy suspects was triggered by a small Social Security raise. "I can't quite figure out the source of why it goes down at the same time food goes up," she says.

He stretches every dollar: a pound of meat lasts weeks in the freezer. He gets, Cindy says, "darn right excited about defrosting some soup.”....Kevin's $48 a month barely covers one bag of groceries. "Four bags of food in a month," Cindy says, "is so much better than one."

Cindy volunteers every Friday at the Akron-Canton Regional Food Bank, where she has learned what the pantry can and can't do. It can't replace SNAP. "I liken it to shopping in only one aisle of the grocery store," she says. "You can't possibly make a healthy meal if you only go down aisle seven."

📦 103,860 pounds of food
🏠 849 households served
❤️ 2,627 individuals supported

These numbers reflect what our community can accomplish when we come together to support our neighbors.

During today's Greene County Mass Food Distribution at Wright State Nutter Center, hundreds of families received access to fresh produce, thanks to the Ohio Agricultural Clearance Program (OACP), and other shelf-stable pantry items.

A special thank you to CareSource for sponsoring our Mass Food Distributions and providing 75 dedicated employee volunteers whose hard work helped make this event possible. We also send thanks to SICSA Pet Adoption and Wellness Center for distributing pet food onsite and Five Rivers Health Centers for providing services through their mobile health clinic.

We appreciate Ohio State Representative Andrea White for Ohio for attending the distribution and standing with our community in the fight against hunger.

While these numbers tell a story of impact, they also remind us that food insecurity continues to affect many in our community. Together, we're helping ensure more families have access to nutritious food.

This year, we've harvested over 3,100 pounds of produce from our urban farm's 40 raised beds, and the growing season isn't done yet! This land used to be a manufacturing site in the heart of Dayton, but through years of hard work from staff and volunteers, it has transformed into a abundant source of nutritious food for our neighbors.

Agriculture belongs everywhere, not just in rural areas, and regenerative farming practices are key to constructing the healthy, local, and enduring food systems that we all deserve. Curious to learn how we do it in a hands-on way? Volunteer in our garden and greenhouse! https://thefoodbankdayton.org/give-time/
