Today, I leave the bench.

While my desire was to continue to serve as Judge, I am humbled by the importance of this moment, of the peaceful transition of power, the connective tissue of our democracy.

I extended my hand to my successor, inviting him and his new staff to view the docket, sharing our internal statistics, and working to the end adjudicating cases. I am proud to pay homage to the judges who preceded me who likewise made sure to leave the Court in good order at points of transition.

The Court's only mission is justice. That is bigger than any one person. I pray each and every day that the Court will continue to serve the ends of justice, and that it will continue to be an institution that inspires the confidence and respect of the people it serves.

I became a lawyer to serve justice. I vow to you, to myself, and to God to live that every day, in whatever role I hold.

Thank you for caring about the betterment of our justice system and our democracy at large. Your personal investment in and attention to our institutions inspires me and it will motivate all true public servants. Keep the faith - more good is on its way.

Was blessed today to help deliver so many presents to the children at Dayton Children's Hospital on behalf of Agape for Youth, Inc. So many amazing kids will have Christmas because of the generosity of our community.

Even though my role will change, service continues.

I am proud to have led another Wills for Veterans at the VA today. It is always an honor to protect and serve the families of those who have risked everything to protect our American freedoms.

Dear friends - Thank you for all of the love and support during this election season. While the result is not what we had hoped or work so hard for, we must respect the decision and the process. The Court is a durable institution because it is bigger than any one person. I vow to conduct an orderly transition in the same spirit of public service that I brought to the bench every day.

“The defendant abused the authority of the position that he had been given, and instead of using his role to strengthen the confidence and character of tomorrow’s young women, he isolated and abused one of those very girls he was supposed to protect.

Mr. Smith indeed coached her, but not just about soccer, he coached her to go lie, coached her to hide things from her family, and coached her to stay silent about his abuse and manipulation. That kind of coaching is criminal, and today this Court sheds light on the darkness of his deeds.”

Throwback Thursday -

Judge Erik Blaine co-chaired the 2011 Access to Justice Gala, raising awareness for the need for pro bono service as well as funds to support pro bono programs locally.

Judge Blaine contributed countless pro bono hours to clients and causes as an attorney and continues to champion programs like Wills for Heroes and Ex-Offender Re-Entry that fill unmet legal needs in our community.

I had the honor of invitation to Chabad of Greater Dayton’s 25th Anniversary Gala, joining in celebrating the work of several wonderful people including my friend Rabbi Shmuel Klatzkin.
