This Black History Month, we encourage Daytonians to look beyond our borders to honor a special bond. Since 1972, Dayton has been proud to call Monrovia, Liberia, a Sister City.

Liberia’s story is a powerful chapter of the African Diaspora. Founded over 200 years ago by Black Americans who sailed across the Atlantic to build a nation of their own, Liberia became a beacon of independence and Pan-African leadership.
From the shores of Providence Island to the streets of Dayton, the spirit of resilience and cultural exchange continues to thrive. Whether it’s through visiting artists, city department connections or educational collaborations with local colleges and universities, our connection to Monrovia reminds us that Black history is a global history.

The Dayton Sister City Committee is putting out a call for submissions for the 2026 Young Authors and Artists Showcase. YAAS is an annual contest that encourages youth worldwide, aged 13 - 18, to express the mission of Sister Cities International through original artwork, literature, photography, and music. Despite the obstacles, and after over a year of planning, Neta and Samira were finally able to share their passion and their aspirations while at the same time instilling that same energy into the Sinclair College and Wright State University communities. The workshops were high-spirited and helped participants tap into their creativity in an effort to affect change. The performance at The Foundry Theater at Antioch College was the crowning point, filled with music, laughter and a sense of community. The Q&A at the end of the performance hinted at further collaboration and the hopes of in-person projects in the near future. Thanks to all who helped make this project come together!

This fall, the collaborative work of Sarah of MADE Studio & Shop and Naysan of Miami Valley Pottery, who traveled to Oiso in July, was featured in Oiso's Utsuwa no Hi ("Pottery Day"). If you want to know more about their experience, be sure to stop by the The Dayton Art Institute this Saturday, December 6 at "Art for All Day!" https://www.facebook.com/share/1Guum7SCUH/

“After a year of preparing for an in-person tour of the U.S., System Ali’s plans were cancelled in August due to visa issues. Instead, the project pivoted to a remote collaboration with three Ohio hip-hop artists.” Holon-based Beit System Ali members Samira and Neta will be facilitating virtual workshops for Sinclair College and Wright State University students on Thursday, November 20. The The Foundry Theater at Antioch College performance will also include a Q&A session with Neta and Samira as they stream in from Berlin where they are prepping fo a concert. We hope to build upon this endeavor and bring them back to Dayton for the proper performance that we had planned for.

“The expression and creation of art is, itself, resistance in my eyes. Because in the process of creating art, it can be joyful, although it can be mixed with pain and tears.”

Last fall, the Dayton Sister City Committee, along with many other organizations, welcomed Neta Weiner and Samira Saraya to Dayton for a couple of days. Neta and Samira are part of Beit System Ali (BSA), a cultural educational movement based in Dayton's sister city of Holon, whose activity is based on the belief in the power of artistic action to promote equality and generate socio-political change. Their visit was an effort to gauge interest in bringing more of their organization back to Dayton. However, after a year of preparation and planning, Neta and Samira’s in-person August 2025 tour in Ohio was cancelled due to no visas being issued for them by the current administration. This project hence pivoted to a truncated, though no less inspirational, and virtual project. Neta and Samira will facilitate two virtual educational programs, one for Wright State University students and one for students at Sinclair College, that encourage brave multicultural discourse, cultivate in-depth encounters, and enable shared society between different cultural groups (thanks to The Iddings Foundation!). Additionally, Neta and Samira will be a part of a remote collaboration with three Ohio hip-hop artists based in Yellow Springs: Jayswifa, Tronee Threat, and ArtGod. Titled "NO VISAS," the performance salvages the effort to put on an in-person concert by staging a hybrid one at The Foundry Theater at Antioch College, with these five renowned hip-hop artists performing both individually and collectively. Through countless remote meetings, sharing inspiration and beats, and discussing what it means to make art in times of political unrest and turmoil, these five artists have pushed themselves to create music together that speaks to the realities of life in America, Palestine, and Israel.

DSCC Treasurer Adam Graham attended the U.S.-Japan Sister City Summit in Osaka recently, which reaffirmed the enduring value of international partnerships built through people-to-people diplomacy. Dayton's relationship with Oiso demonstrates how local engagement fosters global understanding, economic collaboration, and cultural exchange. From what he learned at the Summit, Adam believes our next steps include broadening participation among community leaders, educators, and youth; integrating modern communication tools to sustain active exchanges; strengthening cooperation with business, cultural, and educational institutions; and increasing public visibility of Dayton's international ties.
