Investors and corporations are increasingly buying up single-family homes in parts of Montgomery County, creating concerns about property neglect and companies out-competing first-time homebuyers who would improve neighborhoods, a Dayton Daily News investigation found.

These investors owned nearly a third of single-family homes in some parts of the county in 2024 — particularly West Dayton, but also other parts of the city and, to a less concentrated extent, in parts of Kettering and Miami Twp., according to data from the Federal Reserve Bank of Cleveland.

On the Kettering Health Dayton campus stands the nearly 13,000-square-foot church, made of concrete and Bedford stone. This building, built in 1923, was originally the home of the Second Church of Christ Scientist. Today, it’s the place of worship for Dayton’s Seventh-day Adventist African Church.

Built to resemble the Greek Doric order of architecture, with its tall, simple columns, the building featured a hand-crank elevator and coal-fired heating, only acquiring a gas boiler over 20 years later, in 1958.

Today, the church is undergoing renovations to update its mechanical, HVAC, and electrical systems and restore it to its original beauty. Renovations have been carefully planned to update the facility to its full potential while preserving the period's architecture, style, and landscaping.

Renovations are expected to be completed in early 2026. Once complete, the building will serve as the largest gathering spot for Kettering Health, with just under 600 seats, and will continue to hold worship services for the Seventh-day Adventist African Church.

Kettering Health hopes this historic building will continue to bring the community together.
