Today is the U.S. Coast Guard's 236th birthday!

On Aug. 4, 1790, President George Washington signed the Tariff Act, authorizing 10 cutters proposed by Treasury Secretary Alexander Hamilton. Those cutters formed the Revenue Cutter Service, which eventually became today’s Coast Guard.

This day honors the brave men and women who safeguard our nation’s waterways, enforce maritime law and perform critical search and rescue missions.

Thank you to all of those who have served or are currently serving with the U.S. Coast Guard!
