Heart of Volusia ♥️ Promoting Heart Health ♥️
through education, research, and community services since 1957, benefiting the people of Volusia and Flagler counties.

Heart of Volusia, Inc. is a 50-year old nonprofit agency, founded by a former pharmaceutical firm owner who retired to Daytona Beach. In 1957, a deceased friend left him a bequest to set up an agency dedicated to promoting heart health through research, education and community service. All our efforts and funds stay right here in Volusia and Flagler counties.

Introducing Molly Rehil, HOV's new Executive Director! Take a moment to say hello, and enjoy our interview with this dynamic community member!

Welcome Molly!

Q: How does this specific role align with your personal values, and how will you communicate our organization’s mission to our community?

A: Serving others has always been at the heart of both my personal and professional life. As a mother of three and someone who has spent nearly a decade in the nonprofit sector, I have seen how strong communities can change lives. After moving from Michigan to Florida, I experienced firsthand the importance of connection and community support. Heart of Volusia's mission aligns closely with my belief that when organizations, community leaders, and residents work together, we can improve health outcomes, promote heart health and wellness, and build a stronger, healthier Volusia & Flagler County for everyone.

Q: Non-profits often operate with limited resources. Can you share an example of how you've successfully maximized impact with a tight budget or limited staff?

A: Throughout my nonprofit career, I have often worked with limited resources and competing priorities. I learned to maximize impact by building partnerships, streamlining processes, and focusing on collaboration. Some of the most meaningful outcomes happen not because of abundant resources, but because people come together with a shared purpose.

Q: In the non-profit sector, priorities can shift rapidly based on funding or community needs. Can you describe a time you had to pivot your strategy and how you managed that change?

A: The nonprofit sector is constantly evolving. Whether responding to changing community needs or shifting priorities, I have learned to stay flexible, communicate clearly, and focus on solutions. I view change as an opportunity to learn, grow, and better serve those who depend on our work.

Q: This role requires building relationships with donors, volunteers, and the community. What strategies do you use to cultivate and maintain long-term engagement?

A: I believe strong relationships are built through trust, authenticity, and consistency. My approach is to listen first, communicate openly, and create meaningful opportunities for people to stay connected to our mission. When people feel valued and informed, they become long term partners in the work we do.

Q: How do you define and measure success in this role, ensuring our programs are truly moving the needle on our core objectives?

A: Success is about more than numbers. It’s about creating meaningful improvements in the health and well being of our community. I look at participation, engagement, partnerships, and feedback, while also asking whether our work is increasing awareness, promoting healthier lifestyles, and helping connect people with valuable resources. If we are improving lives and strengthening our community through education, collaboration, and outreach, then we're succeeding.

The Heart Of Volusia Education and Youth initiative is one that we are very proud of and it's moments like these that we cherish.

Pictured here is recent graduate Alex, who is headed to Hamilton College!

HOV helped this young man go to the Student Science Training Program at UF last year, and he just graduated from University High School in Orange City! His family has been a wonderful supporter of HOV, and to them we say thank you!

Congratulations Alex!

Free aqua Zumba classes are being offered for an opportunity to get moving in a fun environment! They will be held June 9 – August 6, on Tuesday and Thursdays, 6:30pm to 7:45pm at Cypress Aquatic Center, 925 George W. Engram Blvd.

Aqua Zumba is a low-impact, high-energy water aerobics class that blends traditional Zumba dance-fitness with aquatic exercise. Often described as the ultimate "pool party," it allows participants to enjoy Latin and international rhythms while the natural resistance of the water challenges muscles and protects joints.

The Environment: Classes take place in shallow water (usually about waist-deep) so you do not need to know how to swim.

The Movements: Land-based Zumba steps (such as salsa, merengue, and reggaeton) are adapted to the water. Because water creates natural drag, the movements are slower and slightly more exaggerated to maximize resistance.

The Intensity: It is an intense cardiovascular and body-toning workout, but the buoyancy of the water keeps the impact off your hips, knees, and ankles.

Key Benefits

Joint-Friendly: Ideal for those with arthritis, recovering from injuries, or anyone looking to reduce wear and tear on their joints.

Natural Resistance: The resistance of water acts as built-in weights, meaning every step and arm movement helps to tone muscles.

Accessible: Suitable for all fitness levels and ages, as participants can adjust the intensity based on how fast or hard they push through the water.

Stress Relieving: Working out to upbeat music in a refreshing pool provides a fun, judgment-free environment.

Who Can Participate: Because you can go at your own pace and your feet remain on the bottom of the pool, it is a great workout for beginners, seniors, pregnant women, and seasoned fitness enthusiasts alike!

🏊‍♀️Free aqua Zumba classes will be held June 2 – August 11, on Tuesday and Thursdays, 6:30 to 7:45 p.m. at Cypress Aquatic Center, 925 George W. Engram Blvd.

An inexpensive, easy-to-use blood pressure monitor that you use at home is a powerful tool to protect your health. It can help you see if your blood pressure is under control and how it responds to new medications or lifestyle changes. It may even provide a more realistic picture of your blood pressure than measurements taken in a doctor's office, which can vary for many reasons. But home monitoring can have problems, too - namely, the equipment.

In a 2023, an international team of researchers reported findings indicating that the vast majority of top-selling blood pressure monitors sold on a popular website are not validated for accuracy. And using a nonvalidated device might threaten your health.

For blood pressure monitors available in the United States, with validation criteria set by the American Medical Association and other U.S. groups and experts, consult the U.S. Blood Pressure Validated Device Listing, or VDL (https://validatebp.org).
