History
Growth
The Daytona Beach Fire Department (DBFD) has a long and storied history. After the first big fire in 1898, several influential citizens formed a volunteer fire department. In 1902 the city purchased its first chemical fire engine. In 1909 the first paid fire chief, Henry T. By the end of that year Charles Messing replaced Titus and was overseeing a department with about 65 volunteers. Fire Chiefs

Today, DBFDโ€™s Engine 1 responded to the area of Orange Avenue and South Martin Luther King Boulevard after a kitten was heard crying inside a storm drain.

Our firefighters were able to open the drain and locate the tiny kitten in a small pipe branching off the main drainage area. Thankfully, a kind bystander stepped up and took the kitten in!

At the Daytona Beach Fire Department, weโ€™re proud to serve our community every day โ€” and that includes looking out for our four-legged friends, too.

Your DBFD Firefighters and Motor Medics are ready for an exciting weekend as riders roll into town! We ask all our residents and visitors to stay alert on the roads, watch for pedestrians, and never ride distracted or under the influence.

Please keep these safety tips in mind:

- Remember to be visible, motorists often have trouble seeing motorcycles
- Dress for safety including helmet, eye protection, sturdy protective/reflective clothing
- Apply effective mental strategies including giving yourself space and time as you search for escape routes and traps, and use lane positioning to see and be seen

- Be aware of motorcycles, they could be in your blind spot
- Donโ€™t expect that a motorcyclist will always be able to move out of the way
- Allow extra stopping distance

Recently, we visited Cradles of Greatness and Lil Angels Childcare to show off our fire engines and the friendly firefighters who ride on them. As always, our young friends were engaged, curious, and asked some great questions.

1. Don't charge devices on a pillow, blanket, or bed. Charge them on a hard, flat surface where heat can safely dissipate.
2. Charge tool and e-bike batteries according to the manufacturer's instructions. Keep charging batteries away from exits, doorways, and anything that can catch fire.
3. Check your smoke alarms. Test them according to the manufacturer's directions to make sure they are working properly.

Today, Engine 6 visited Rising Stars Academy of Florida to talk about fire safety and introduce the children to some of our friendly firefighters. Our young friends were engaged, curious, and asked some great questions! We even got to visit some of our smallest friends in the nursery.

Thank you, Rising Stars Academy, for welcoming Engine 6 and helping us teach the importance of fire safety from an early age!

Do you know how to properly operate a fire extinguisher? Remember PASS:
๐ โ€” Pull the pin
๐€ โ€” Aim at the base of the fire
๐’ โ€” Squeeze the handle
๐’ - Sweep from side to side
Fire extinguishers should only be used when the fire is small, you have a clear escape route, and it is safe to do so. If the fire grows or you cannot extinguish it immediately, get out, stay out, and call 9-1-1.

This Fire Prevention Week, take a few minutes to learn the basics and make fire safety part of your plan.

Lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day like power tools, scooters, E-bikes, and more. These batteries store a lot of energy so itโ€™s important to know how to charge them properly.

- Charge large item batteries like scooters, E-bikes, and power tools outside when possible
- Do not block exits when charging and do not charge these batteries near an exit
- Do not charge batteries neat anything that can burn
- Never leave a charging battery unattended
- Keep batteries away from sunlight and extreme heat
- Let the battery cool before charging

Stop using the battery if you notice unusual heat, swelling, leaking, hissing or popping sounds, a strong odor, and/or smoke. If a battery explodes or catches fire, get out of the area or structure and call 9-1-1 immediately. To properly recycle a battery take it to a battery safe recycling facility. Visit call2recycle.org to find a spot near you.

The US National Weather Service Melbourne Florida reports a marginal risk for excessive rainfall in our area through Thursday. This is due to a front that has stalled over central Florida, producing repeated rounds of showers and storms. Total rainfall accumulation of 2-4โ€ is expected and locally higher amounts exceeding 5โ€ cannot be ruled out. This heavy rainfall brings the risk of flooding in low lying and urban areas.
Weโ€™d like to remind our residents and visitors that it only takes a small amount of moving water to create a dangerous situation. Water can hide washed-out pavement, debris, or other hazardsโ€”and conditions can change quickly.

When you encounter a flooded roadway:
- Obey road-closure signs and barricades.
- Never attempt to drive through standing or moving water.
- Turn around and find another route.
- Never assume you know how deep the water is.

Saving a few minutes isnโ€™t worth risking your vehicleโ€”or your life.
