Drivers must stop at least 20 feet away from a school bus displaying flashing red lights and an extended stop arm. All approaching traffic in both directions must stop on undivided roads, while divided highways with a physical barrier or raised median generally allow opposing traffic to proceed with caution.
School Bus Light Signals
• Yellow flashing lights: The bus is preparing to stop; drivers should slow down and prepare to stop.
• Red flashing lights and stop arm: The bus is loading or unloading children; all traffic must come to a complete stop.
Traffic Direction Rules
• Following the bus: All trailing vehicles must stop.
• Oncoming traffic (two or three lanes): Must stop.
• Divided highway with physical barrier/median: Oncoming traffic on the opposite side may proceed, but traffic traveling behind or next to the bus in the same direction must stop.
• Undivided multi-lane road: Traffic in all directions must stop
