Today, Governor Kim Reynolds, Iowa Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Iowa Department of Public Safety (DPS) held a press conference to warn Iowans about the increasing dangers posed by kratom and newly emerging, highly concentrated synthetic kratom related products.

Although kratom is often marketed as a natural or herbal supplement for pain, anxiety, or opioid withdrawal, officials stressed that availability does not equal safety.

We know there has been a lot of discussion recently on the conditions of Lake Malone and wanted to take a minute to explain what is happening.

Lake Malone is currently experiencing a very large algae bloom. These occur when algae and/or blue-green cyanobacteria grow out of control! While algae is an essential part of the ecosystem, large blooms can be very harmful and reduce oxygen levels in the water and prevent sunlight from reaching submerged aquatic vegetation. Huge algae blooms are triggered by a perfect combination of a few things including:
🧪Excess nutrients, such as phosphorus and nitrogen caused by runoff (most likely from those monstrous storms we experienced last week) and large aquatic vegetation die-offs (like the invasive curly leaf pondweed that dies when water temps get high)
🌡️Warm water temperatures
☀️Lots of sunlight
💦Calm/Stagnant water

All of these conditions make a perfect environment for bacteria and algae to grow! Unfortunately algae blooms are becoming more and more common, and occur every year across all 50 states.

If you want to do your part in preventing this from happening, or at least reduce its severity, here are a few steps that can be taken to help improve the watershed:
🌱Use less fertilizer or switch to low-phosphorus fertilizers and don't apply it before a heavy rain
🐕Pick up pet waste - this contains high levels of nitrogen and phosphorus
🧼Choose phosphate-free detergents and cleaners
