DeKalb Airport is seeing strong charter and corporate traffic, highlighting the airport’s role as a key transportation hub.

We have welcomed multiple collegiate-level sports charters arriving and departing from locations outside Illinois to compete against NIU’s basketball teams, and several corporate flights operate in and out of the Airport each week.

Regional pilots didn’t miss last week’s chance to take to the skies during favorable weather. DeKalb Airport line service technicians were ready, assisting with refueling operations and on-demand customer service.

DeKalb Airport line staff successfully handled the recent early morning arrival of a Bombardier BD-100-1A10 despite difficult winter conditions.

Thanks to proactive efforts by Public Works, the runways were cleared of snow prior to touchdown. The aircraft was fueled, de-iced, and departed within an hour, demonstrating the team's commitment to rapid and reliable service.

Snow showers and strong winds whipping fluffy snow around DeKalb Airport has not stalled operations. Even with frigid temperatures added into the mix, the Airport saw no delayed arrivals or departures through last week.

DeKalb Airport takes care of the Huskies, and even their opponents.

The University of Buffalo men’s basketball team came into DeKalb on New Year’s Eve. Due to winter weather conditions, the aircraft required deicing services prior to departure, which were successfully provided by Airport staff to ensure a safe and timely flight.

DeKalb served as a reliever airport this month after DuPage Airport had to close for several hours unexpectedly. During the closure, DeKalb Airport staff hangered eight Cessna 172 aircraft, which remained in the Community Hangar over to protect them from the elements.

Efficient snow removal by DeKalb Public Works has kept DeKalb Airport running through several rounds of early-winter snow, totaling about 13 inches.

Along with clearing the City’s roads, plow crews worked for 22 hours to keep up with conditions and clear the runways, taxiways and aprons during the Thanksgiving weekend snowstorm. The operations were a success with a jet scheduled for a 9 a.m. departure that Sunday morning able to take off safely.

Installation of DeKalb Airport’s new perimeter fencing is substantially completed.

The ten-foot fence, primarily funded through federal sources, further restricts access to the airfield and is part of the work needed to earn Part 139 certification, which would allow the airport to serve larger aircraft. Final approval is expected in the spring to make sure new grass near the fence becomes established.

DeKalb Airport supported life-saving medical care in November.

The nation’s network of airports, both large and small, is needed in cases where every second counts. DeKalb Airport served that role this month when late in the evening, the airport was used by the Nationwide Organ Recovery Alliance to deliver life-saving treatment. Your dedicated airport staff remained on site during late hours to assist the doctors and pilots in providing the critical care.

Along with clearing snow and ice from the City’s streets, DeKalb Public Works is responsible for clearing the runways and taxiways, allowing DeKalb Airport to continue serving the region.

To assist these operations, DeKalb Airport has received a new wheel loader and skid steer with attachments for snow removal. And just in time for this weekend’s possible snow event, Airport staff trained on the new tools last week. The equipment was purchased through state and federal funding.
