Southwest Louisiana Operations Supervisor Carl G. recently presented DeQuincy's Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One with two new AEDs!

An AED is a portable medical device used to treat cardiac arrest, a condition in which the heart stops beating suddenly unexpectedly.

We're grateful for the opportunity to provide this lifesaving equipment to the community!

Mutual aid tank battery fire!

At 11:09 am, Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One was dispatched as mutual aid to assist Beauregard Parish Fire District 2 with a oil storage tank fire on Pete Gimnick Rd.

Command unit 901, Engines 5 and 7 responded with 7 firefighters. On arrival of Beauregard FD 2, several storage tanks were burning as well as a ground spill fire within a d**e retention area.

Upon completion of size-up, an incident action plan was established. Firefighters deployed (2) 500 gpm ground monitors and established a water supply utilizing multiple tankers from BFD 2. Ward 6 Engine 7 deployed firefighting foam on the ground monitors and utilized a master stream to cool the tanks. The fire was brought under control quickly with approximately 100 gallons of foam agent and about 6,000 gallons water.

Other agencies that also responded:
Beauregard Fire District 1, Beauregard Fire District 3, Louisiana DEQ.

Citgo Emergency Response Team was requested to respond with firefighting foam; however, they were canceled prior to arriving due to the quick extinguishment of the fire.

The mutual aid response shows the effectiveness that departments have when consistently training and working together as we respond to emergencies in our communities.

Mutual Aid Structure Fire!

At approximately 6:10am, Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One was requested by Beauregard Parish Fire District 2 to respond to a reported structure fire on Young Road.

Ward 6 Command unit 901 arrived on scene at 6:13am to a fully involved structure behind a residential home. Prior to arrival of the first engine the fire spread to the residential home.

Ward 6 Engine 5 and Service 6 responded. Command requested additional apparatus and manpower from HOUSTON RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT and DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Department. Acadian Ambulance responded and provided medical monitoring for all firefighters as they worked this incident. Beauregard Parish Fire District 4 responded with an air trailer.

Sulphur Fire Dept. Was requested to move an Engine to Houston River station and Ward 5 Fire moved an engine to DeQuincy Fire departmemt to cover the fire districts for other emergencies.

At 8:44 am Ward 6 Fire was dispatched to a vehicle crash on Bankens Rd. Sulphur FD responded and handled this call while we were still on scene assisting Beauregard FD 2.

All Ward 6 units were back in service at Ward 6 station at 10:30am.

Structure Fire!!

At 2:58pm, Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One responded to a reported structure fire on Juniper Road as automatic aid to HOUSTON RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT. On arrival of HRFD command, the scene size up included a single family dwelling with smoke and fire showing.

Engine 7, Service 6 & 8, Command units 901 & 903, Air Trailer 1 responded with 10 firefiighters. Crews immediately began a transitional fire attack with an aggressive interior suppression operation. Fire conditions began to threaten the structural integrity of the structure. Firefighters were removed and defensive fire suppression operations were established.

A water shuttle operation was conducted along with mutual aid activated from the following departments. Carlyss Fire Dept, Westlake Fire Department, Sulphur Fire Dept., and Lake Charles Fire Department. The high heat indexes was taxing to personnel and the additional manpower ensured firefighters received proper rehab during suppression operations.

Acadian Ambulance provided medical monitoring for firefighters, CPSO assisted with traffic control for water shuttle operations. DeQuincy Volunteer Fire Department provided standby coverage for the Ward 6 area while we worked this incident.

Unfortunately, the structure was a total loss. There were no injuries to firefighters on scene. One occupant received minor burns prior to arrival of the fire department.

All Ward 6 Units were released from the scene at approximately 8:00pm.

Volunteer Firefighters Complete Academy!

The 2nd Annual SWLA Volunteer Fire Academy started in October 2025 and was completed on June 25, 2026. The academy was hosted by Ward Six Fire Protection District No. One and volunteers from Hackberry Volunteer Fire Department, HOUSTON RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT, Jeff Davis Fire District 3, Jeff Davis Fire District 5, Ward 1 Fire Department, and Ward 6 Fire completed the curriculum. The firefighters received national certifications in Haz-Mat Awareness and Operations, Firefighter 1, and Firefighter 2.

The firefighters were honored with a graduation and badge pinning ceremony on July 2, 2026 at 6:30pm at the Iowa Community Center in Iowa Louisiana. The ceremony was attended by family and friends of each graduate with approximately 90 people attending.

Each Firefighter selected a family member or mentor to pin their badge following the Firefighter Oath of Office. A meal was provided by Acadian Ambulance Service and each participating department provided Hors d'oeuvres for the family and friends attending.

All of these individuals dedicate themselves to serving their communities as Volunteer firefighters. Ready at a moments notice to leave a family gathering, wake up at 2am, miss holiday dinners, leave church, and many other missed functions to respond to an emergency in the community. Take a moment to thank them for their service.

Iowa Volunteer Fire Department was instrumental in coordinating the use of the Iowa Community Center, planning and organizing the food items that were donated.

Iowa VFD Fire Chief also recognized Firefighter Michael Benton and promoted him to Lieutenant at the ceremony.

Nights 1 and 2 of our Fire Safety Camp have been so much fun.

On night 1 Sulphur Fire Dept. came and put on a presentation that the kids absolutely loved. They learned about fire safety and what to do if a fire occurs. They crafted and even learned a dance!

On night 2,HOUSTON RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT brought the fire extinguisher prop over and taught them how to use a fire extinguisher and extinguish a fire. They also went through a firefighter agility course, and learned about fire safety and the importance of smoke alarms in an inflatable house borrowed from Beauregard Fire District One.

Weather Alert!!!!

The National Weather Service is predicting several inches of rain over the next few days. Heavy rains may lead to flooded roads, plan your route and drive with caution.

Ward 6 Firefighters have responded to two vehicle crashes since 9 pm last night. Inclement weather could have been a contributing factor.

If you live in flood prone areas be prepared.

The Calcasieu Parish Police Jury now has sand and bags available to residents free of charge at multiple Parish locations.

Ward 6 Barn – 1275 Plum St., DeQuincy.

Iowa City Hall – 115 N. Thompson Ave., Iowa (baseball field).

Ward 5 Barn – 129 Third St., Starks.

Vinton Public Works Yard – 1320 Hampton St., Vinton.

A sandbag-filling machine will be available during daylight hours beginning tomorrow, June 16 at 7 a.m. at the following locations:

Former Old Tyme Variety Store location – 810 Ruth St., Sulphur.

Public Works East – 5500-B Swift Plant Road, Lake Charles (access through the back gates located on James Sudduth Parkway).

Parish staff will be on site during daylight hours beginning tomorrow, June 16 at 7 a.m. at all locations to monitor operations, maintain supplies, and help ensure public safety.

Residents should bring their own shovels and will be responsible for filling and loading their own sandbags.
