39LA3000-1991.05 / Cat.: 131 Clovers Imperial Mange Medicine,
Happy Tuesday everyone! Today, while going through the archaeological collection from the 1990-1992 Main Street Restoration, archives volunteers came across this bottle. After a double take (and a little research), this is what we found out.

"The H. Clay Glover Company was founded in 1876 by its namesake, Dr. Henry Clay Glover (1845-1914), in New York City. Dr. Glover was a veterinary surgeon (V.S.) who patented, formulated, produced, and sold one of the most extensive U.S. patented lines of veterinary medicines primarily for dogs and other animals. He gained initial and long-term success with his popular Glover’s Dog Mange Cure and was the recipient of the Medal of Superiority by the American Institute of New York. Glover’s Mange Cure was a product formulated as a result of a partnership between Charles B. Mathis (1844-1929), a Toms River druggist, and Dr. Glover. They decided to work together to develop a cure for mange disease. Mathis formulated the successful treatment which was eventually sold worldwide. It was marketed as Glover’s Imperial Mange Cure (later Remedy) and sold for 50 cents per bottle. The two partners agreed to market and sell the product in New York City. Glover incorporated his company in Manhattan, N.Y. but prepared the remedy in the small downtown village of Toms River, N.J.”

According to the Museum of American History, Glovers Imperial Mange Medicine had both human and animal applications based on the original paper label on the bottle. One of these uses was for dandruff.

“FOR THE HUMAN SCALP- When us of Glover’s Imperial Mange Medicine is indicated for diseases of the scalp, or loss of hair from the HUMAN HEAD, massage Glover’s gently into the scalp every other day, then shampoo with Glover’s Imperial Medicated Soap.”

This bottle and numerous other hair tonic bottles were recovered along Lee Street, near the location of the Al Breeding’s barber shop, (see photograph from the Haas scrapbook, “Deadwood”.)

Deadwood Trolley Advertisement for Upcoming Vintage Base Ball Games

Happy Wednesday everyone! Here is a sneak peek at the Deadwood trolley signs that will advertise the upcoming vintage base ball games on Sunday, June 14, 2026 and Sunday, July 5, 2026. Deadwood Parking & Transportation Director Justin Lux and Historic Preservation/Planning & Zoning Administrative Assistant Cammie Schmidt hold the sign.

The signs are based off the black and white photograph of an electric trolley car from the Adams Museum collection, circa 1900. The banners will be placed on the trolleys one week before each game. There will also be a brochure discussing the games and locations available on the trolley and City of Deadwood and City of Lead’s webpages. Remember to mark your calendars – only 32 days before game day!

150th Anniversary, Vintage Base Ball Games – Lead vs. Deadwood June 14, 2026 and July 5, 2026

Happy Wednesday everyone! 2026 marks the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States. Coincidentally, this year also commemorates the 150th anniversary (or sesquicentennial) of the founding of the communities of Deadwood and Lead. To honor this occasion, both communities have partnered on planning a series of projects and events throughout the year.

The idea of hosting a vintage base ball game began in 2013 with the research and development of four outdoor interpretive panels located at Keene Memorial Baseball Field in Deadwood. All through this time, staff occasionally joked about establishing a public exposition on how early baseball was once played in the mining camps. Ironically, it took a sesquicentennial celebration to bring this to fruition.

To honor this occasion, it was discussed and agreed upon to bring back the friendly rivalry between the communities of Deadwood and Lead. The players that make up this organization are represented by the Mayors of Deadwood and Lead and the Central City Town Board President. The remaining team players are all members of the various northern Black Hills communities. We certainly hope that you enjoy this stroll down memory lane!
