As Halloween night approaches, the Dearborn Heights Police Department wants to remind everyone to stay extra alert on the roads: 

Slow Down: Even if the posted speed limit is 25 mph, slow down in residential areas. Kids will be amped up on candy and crossing streets!

Stay Visible: Ensure trick-or-treaters have flashlights, glow sticks, or reflective elements.

Cross Safely: Remind children to cross at corners and avoid darting out between parked cars.

Put the Phone Away: Keep your eyes on the road and stay free of distractions behind the wheel.

Dearborn Heights Police is participating in Operation Safe Stop in recognition of National School Bus Safety Week, October 19-23, 2026. While the campaign runs this week, special enforcement will continue through the end of October.

Residents can expect an increased police presence around schools and along school bus routes as officers work to keep students safe and hold drivers accountable for illegally passing stopped school buses.

Dearborn Heights Police want to share some Halloween safety tips and must-know rules so everyone stays safe this Halloween:
• Use the crosswalk and never cross between cars
• Parents, put the phone down (especially while driving)
• Only approach homes with lights on
• Never let kids go inside a stranger’s house
• Always check their candy before they eat it

Three veteran members of the Dearborn Heights Police Department were promoted to the rank of lieutenant during a recent swearing-in ceremony at the Dearborn Heights City Hall. The swearings-in were presided over by City Clerk Lynne Senia and joined by several elected officials, members of the Dearborn Heights Police and Fire Departments, friends and family members. The promoted officers include:

Mohamad Bazzy is a 12-year veteran of the Department, serving as a DHPD officer since 2014. He started his law enforcement career with the Wayne State University Police Department, where he served from 2011 to 2014.

Gene Derwick is a 13-year veteran of the Department, having served since 2013. Prior to his start in Dearborn Heights, Derwick served with the Hazel Park, Walled Lake and Inkster Police Departments, beginning in 2001.

Michael Gondek is a 21-year veteran of the Department, having joined in 2005. Prior to his tenure in Dearborn Heights, he served as an officer in the Northville City Police Department from 1998-2025.

From June 1 through October 17, 2026, the Dearborn Heights Police Department issued 7,058 traffic tickets across the city. Of those, 4,377 were issued on main roads and 2,681 in neighborhoods.

This breakdown provides a closer look at traffic enforcement efforts throughout all six police districts as we continue working to improve road safety across Dearborn Heights.

What a night! This past Thursday, the Dearborn Heights Police Department hosted its Annual Trunk or Treat, and our community showed up in full Halloween spirit.

Creative costumes, decorated trunks, and so many smiling faces. Thank you to everyone who came out, and to the officers, volunteers, and families who made it a fun, safe evening for our kids.

TODAY: Join us for our annual Trunk or Treat, when the Dearborn Heights Police Department parking lot turns into a haunted candy land. Ghosts, bats, and a whole lot of treats will be waiting for you on Thursday, October 15 from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM at 25637 Michigan Avenue. Come in costume if you dare.
