📢 ATTENTION DECATUR RESIDENTS: Temporary Water Disinfection Update 📢
Beginning September 1st, the City of Decatur Water Treatment Plant will start a routine, temporary change to our drinking water disinfection method. This process will last for about 4 weeks, ending on September 30th.
🔒 IS THE WATER SAFE?
Yes! The water remains completely safe to drink and use throughout this entire process.
💧 WHAT IS CHANGING?
Normal Operation: We typically use chloramine (a mix of chlorine and ammonia) to treat our water.
Temporary Change: For the month of September, we will switch to free chlorine only.
🔧 WHY ARE WE DOING THIS?
This temporary switch is a standard, widely used preventative maintenance procedure for municipal water systems across Texas. Over time, natural minerals can attach to the inside of water pipes. The free chlorine helps safely cleanse the lines, ensuring we continue to provide the highest quality water to our community.
🚒 WHAT YOU MIGHT NOTICE:
Hydrant Flushing: You may see Decatur Public Works staff flushing fire hydrants more frequently. This is normal! We must flush lines with low water flow to ensure the free chlorine moves properly through the entire system.
Slight Discoloration: Changes in water pressure during this process can occasionally loosen mineral buildup, causing temporary discoloration.
