The Decatur Railroad Bridge has connected our city to the region and the nation for more than a century, surviving war, rebuilding, and continuing to support the industries that power our local economy today.

Roads, rec, and a little less “when is that happening?”

The Decatur City Council meets for a work session today at 5 p.m. in the Council Chambers, with several projects up for discussion that residents will want to watch.

On the list:
- Carrie Matthews Recreation Center renovations: a construction bid is ready for consideration, and the project is moving closer to kicking off.

- Bunny Lane widening, with a $477,114 bid recommended for award.

- Wilson Morgan Park access improvements, including removing the service road between Sandlin Road and Central Parkway, adding turn-lane improvements, and relandscaping the area.

- Traffic signal changes on Fourth Avenue SE, where signals at Grant Street and Johnston Street are proposed to be removed and replaced with stop signs.

Translation: Rec center progress. Road work progress. Safer traffic flow progress.

This is what progress looks like.

Resurfacing is underway in Decatur, and crews from Rogers Group are out working to get it done.

What you’re seeing here is part of the 2026 resurfacing plan in action. Streets across all five districts are being improved through a process that evaluates condition, traffic, connectivity, and long-term maintenance needs.

No dartboard. Just data, planning, and a lot of asphalt.

More work is on the way as crews continue moving across the city.

Earth Day, the Decatur way.

Our Environmental Services team spent the day at Chestnut Grove Elementary teaching the next generation how to take care of the place we all call home.

From spotting native plants to planting wildflowers, learning about recycling, and getting a close-up look at the “claw” truck in action, it was a day full of hands-on fun and real-world lessons.

Bonus: every student left with a few goodies and a little more know-how on keeping Decatur clean.

This Earth Day, remember: stormwater doesn’t get treated. It flows straight into our creeks, rivers, and waterways.

That means what’s on our streets ends up in our water.

Here’s how you can help, starting today:
• Don’t litter
• Pick up pet waste
• Limit fertilizers and pesticides
• Check your car for leaks
• Dispose of chemicals properly
• Wash your car on grass or at a facility
