The Morgan County Sheriffโs Office is aware of the social media trend commonly referred to as the โCat in the Hatโ trend and wants to encourage parents, students, and our community to use good judgment when encountering or participating in viral content. The trend appears to have began oversees and is now spreading across the US.
What may be intended as a joke or prank can quickly become a serious matter when a post, message, photo, or video includes threatening language or causes fear or concern in a school or community. Threats made online will be taken seriously and investigated.
Posting or sharing threatening content can lead to consequences that extend far beyond social media, including school disciplinary action, a law enforcement investigation, and possible criminal charges. Claiming afterward that something was โjust a jokeโ does not necessarily erase those consequences.
Think before you post, share, or forward. A few seconds online can have a lasting impact.
If you receive or see a threatening post, donโt help it spread by reposting or sharing it. Instead, preserve the information and report it promptly to law enforcement or the appropriate school officials.
Help us keep our communities safe by making responsible choices online. We take all threats seriously. If there is ever a credible threat, we will share information and keep you informed.
