The Brighter DeKalb Foundation is a nonprofit organization in metro-Atlanta, Georgia, established to support behavioral health and developmental disability services provided by the DeKalb Community Service Board (CSB). Donations made to the Brighter DeKalb Foundation will fund developmental disability and behavioral health programs, which provided services to more than 11,000 uninsured and underin

sured youth and adults. The Foundation accomplishes its mission by:

• Raising funds and charitable gifts for initiatives and services offered by DeKalb CSB.

• Promoting awareness and support for DeKalb CSB.

• Strengthening the link between DeKalb CSB, stakeholders and the community to enhance giving opportunities.

• Developing partnerships and collaborations to advance the mission and vision of DeKalb CSB.

The DeKalb County Planning, Economic Development and Community Services (PECS) Committee kicked-off the DeKalb County Behavioral Health Coalition (DCBHC) at their bimonthly committee meeting last Tuesday, July 23.

The purpose of the DCBHC is to assess needs and improve mental health care for DeKalb County residents. DeKalb County Commissioner Michelle Long Spears, Chairman of the DeKalb County PECS Committee stated “In my years as a commissioner there has not been a collaborative effort like this before. This new approach is a way to convene key providers and stakeholders to tackle this problem together to create community change around behavioral health and substance abuse.” Over 10 organizations have come together to facilitate dialogue, improve partnerships, and develop a community needs assessment to guide county resources and align actions across providers to serve the behavioral health needs of the residents of DeKalb County.

July is National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. This annual observance raises awareness about the unique challenges that affect the mental health of racial and ethnic minority and American Indian/Alaska Native (AI/AN) populations.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, Claratel Behavioral Health was honored with a Proclamation from DeKalb County. The Proclamation was read at the recent DeKalb County Board of Commissioners meeting.

Our CEO, Fabio van der Merwe, addressed the audience and asked them to consider how we support mental health in public policy, schools, businesses, and the community. Our Board Vice-Chairman, Andre Moorer, and his wife gave an inspirational message and Andre recited a touching poem about his son.

Our Chief Human Resources Officer Albertine B. Robinson has been developing and supporting our staff since 2013 as our Human Resource Manager. In September of 2020 she was appointed as our Chief Human Resource Officer. Thank you for all you do!

Our CEO, Fabio Van Der Merwe, has a B.A. in Psychology and a M.A. in Clinical Psycholog. He has held positions in the departments of Compliance, Quality, and Utilization Management. In June 2020, he was appointed to Chief Executive Officer. Thank you for 16 years of service.
