Happy Preservation Week!

At C. Benton Kline, Jr. Special Collections and Archives, we are committed to preserving theological memories, sacred stories, and institutional history for future generations.

This year’s theme, “Is This Thing On?: Preserving Memory and Building Archives,” reminds us that archives keep memory alive.

Preservation Week: April 26–May 2, 2026

Archives are more than storehouses of old materials; they are sacred spaces where memory is preserved, voices are recovered, and forgotten stories are brought back to life.

The recent Morgan Fellowship research of our associates, Ayodele John Alonge and Jaykwon Hosey, is a powerful reminder that archives do more than preserve old records. They safeguard human journeys, faith, culture, and stories that time could easily have erased.

Every manuscript, book, inscription, and document has a voice. The question is whether we will take the time to listen.

“Archiving for the Public Good: Bringing Communities Together Through History.”

The session highlighted how we at the C. Benton Kline, Jr. Special Collections & Archives are collaborating with UNC Charlotte’s J. Murrey Atkins Library to support genealogical research, connect communities, and foster reconciliation through archival work.

Some key takeaways from the session:
• Helping people discover their family histories, including those of enslaved ancestors
• Focusing on the stories of Black Presbyterian communities
• Supporting churches as they build their own community archives
• Making over 800,000 church records digital so more people can access them

A strong reminder: archives are tools for truth, memory, and healing.
