The Wise County Sheriff’s Office has received reports of scam phone calls from individuals claiming to be a member of our agency. In some cases, the caller identifies themselves as “Lieutenant Ryan Taylor.”

⚠️ There is no employee by that name at the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.

These callers may claim you have an outstanding warrant or legal issue and demand payment to resolve the matter.

Please remember:
❌ We will NEVER call and ask for payment over the phone.
❌ We do NOT accept payments for warrants, missed jury duty, or any other legal matters over the phone.
❌ We will never request payment through gift cards, wire transfers, payment apps, or cryptocurrency.

If you receive a suspicious call claiming to be from the Sheriff’s Office:
📞 Hang up immediately.
📞 Call our non-emergency number at 940-627-5971 to verify whether the call is legitimate.

Scammers often use fear and urgency to pressure people into acting quickly. Take a moment, verify the information, and don’t send money to anyone over the phone.

Please help us spread the word by sharing this post with friends and family, especially those who may be more vulnerable to these types of scams.

Last week, we had the privilege of celebrating Investigator Jay Polhemus and his retirement after 13 years of dedicated service to the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.

Throughout his career, Jay has been much more than an investigator. He has been a teacher, mentor, and trusted resource to countless deputies, investigators, and employees. His willingness to share knowledge, offer guidance, and invest in the success of others has left a lasting impact on our agency.

In addition to his service to Wise County, Jay also represented our agency as a Task Force Officer with the Tarrant County Regional Auto Crimes Task Force, helping investigate and combat vehicle theft and related crimes throughout the region.

While he will certainly be missed, his influence will continue to be felt through the many people he mentored and the work he helped shape. Please join us in congratulating Jay on a well-earned retirement and thanking him for his years of service to Wise County and the law enforcement profession.

We wish you all the best in this next chapter, Jay! 💙

This week, members of the Sheriff’s Office completed ALERRT Advanced Active Attack Integrated Response (AAIR) training.

AAIR training brings law enforcement, fire, and EMS personnel together to prepare for one of the most challenging situations first responders may face. By training as a unified team, we improve our ability to rapidly locate victims, provide lifesaving medical care, and safely evacuate the injured during critical incidents.

We would like to extend our sincere appreciation to Wise County EMS for their partnership and assistance throughout the training. Their involvement is essential to ensuring a coordinated response when seconds matter most.

We would also like to thank Grace Fellowship for generously allowing us to utilize their facilities for this important training. Community partnerships like these help us better prepare to protect and serve the citizens of Wise County.

Training together today helps save lives tomorrow.

This isn’t a boring lecture series where someone reads PowerPoints for 3 hours straight. You’ll meet the people behind the uniform, see equipment and tactics up close, and gain a whole new perspective on what it takes to serve this community.

Whether you’re curious about law enforcement, want to better understand how things work, or just want an experience most people never get, this class is for you.

This week, Sheriff Cary Mellema was officially sworn in as a member of the National Sheriffs’ Association Board of Directors after being elected by his peers at the National Sheriffs’ Association Annual Conference.

The National Sheriffs’ Association (NSA) represents sheriffs, deputies, and law enforcement professionals from across the United States. Its Board of Directors helps guide the organization’s mission, provides leadership on issues affecting public safety, and works to support and advance the profession of sheriffs nationwide. Board members collaborate on policy development, training initiatives, legislative priorities, and best practices that impact communities across the country.

Sheriff Mellema’s election to the Board of Directors is a reflection of his commitment to public service and the respect he has earned among law enforcement leaders nationwide. His service on the board will provide an opportunity to help shape discussions on important public safety issues while bringing valuable insight and resources back to Wise County.

After years as our go-to IT expert, last week we had the opportunity to celebrate Don Pliler as he officially begins retirement.

Don has been the behind-the-scenes problem solver for the last 8 years! With his knowledge, dedication, and willingness to help he has made a lasting impact on the Wise County Sheriff’s Office.

We’re incredibly thankful for his years of hard work and we’re glad to celebrate this special milestone with him.

Congratulations, Don, on your retirement! Wishing you nothing but the best in this next chapter!

Today, we remember the brave men and women who gave their lives in service to our country. Memorial Day is a reminder that freedom comes at a cost, and we honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Their courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.
