How do you say goodbye to someone who has been an integral part of the district for as long as Ms. Turner has? It's not easy, so we think we'll just leave her words of wisdom below. Thank you for everything, Ms. Turner!

🍎📚 Here's to Thirty-Nine Years! 📚🍎

Here’s to a fantastic career all here at Decatur Public Schools! People asked me, “Why have you stayed in one school so long?” The answer is a combination of love for the community and a feeling of support for all of my students. I suppose you could add friendships into the combo, too. I really enjoyed teaching in a small community. Where you could get to know your students and their families. Now that I have been in Decatur for so long, I’ve begun to get many past students' children and, yes, even grandchildren. It has been so wonderful to be involved again with these past students

I will miss my students and being involved in education. I have many fond memories of my time teaching. Most days it didn’t feel like it was a job. It was more like going to a place where I could make a real difference in the lives of my students. I also made many lasting friendships with those I taught with. I will miss our times together. I know that I will still spend time with them and make more fond memories.

The only real advice I have for a new teacher is to be patient and understanding; really get to know your students well. Utilize kindness and humor whenever possible. Be interested in what your students do when they are not at school. Catch a game they are playing in, attend and show you are interested. Bond with them early in the year, and they will know you care about them. This helps to make for a great year.

I have many plans for retirement. I plan on spending more quality time with my own grown up children. My grandson is growing up so quickly I can’t wait to be more involved with him. I will be traveling since my children live on opposite sides of the US. There are many things I haven’t had time to see and now I can.

Know that I hold all of my past students in my heart and in my memories. I wish them the very best. Thanks to all my colleagues, past and present, who have made this journey fun. Thanks to the community of Decatur for allowing me to be a part of your children’s lives. I will miss you all! --Ms. Turner

Mrs. Kight's advice for new teachers is, "A student is like an iceberg. It’s not only the surface of the iceberg that counts; underneath the surface matters as well."
