The Adams County Healthy Families team attended the 3rd Annual Indiana Mental Health Summit 2026 last week in Fort Wayne, Indiana. The event featured keynote speaker Zak Williams, a mental health advocate and son of the late actor Robin Williams. The summit offered workshops, panel discussions, and plenty of networking opportunities.

The Healthy Families staff explored new ways to support families, in our local community, as they navigate their mental health challenges.

If you or someone you know needs help, don’t hesitate to reach out to us or call 988 for any mental health needs and services.

Safe sleep can lower the risk of SIDS and help your baby sleep more safely 🤍💤

Here are a few important reminders for parents and caregivers:

✔️ Always place baby on their back for every sleep
✔️ Use a firm, flat sleep surface
✔️ Keep the crib empty — no pillows, blankets, or stuffed toys
✔️ Dress baby in light layers to avoid overheating
✔️ Share a room, not a bed, for at least the first 6 months

🚫 Unsafe sleep setups like tummy sleeping, loose bedding, soft pillows, or bed-sharing can increase the risk of suffocation and sleep-related accidents.

Simple changes can make a big difference ✨

A new study published recently in the journal Science, which found that reducing sugar in the first 1,000 days (from conception to age 2), can have huge lifelong health benefits.

The study looked at the health impact of the UK’s World War II-era sugar rationing on a population-level – and the results are fascinating!

🔬 Specifically, the study found:
⭐️ A 35% reduction in the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes
⭐️ A 20% reduction in the risk of high blood pressure
⭐️ A 4-year delay in the onset of diabetes diagnosis
⭐️ A 2-year delay in the onset of hypertension
⭐️ A 30% decrease in obesity risk

If we want to live longer, healthier, we really need to take a serious inventory of our daily sugar intake and adjust!

A good reminder: babies don’t need pillows, blankets,
or toys in their cribs.
For every nap and bedtime, practice the ABCs:
Alone: Babies should be placed alone with
caregiver nearby in the same room
Back: On his or her back
Crib: With only a tight-fitting sheet, no bumper
pads, pillows, blankets or stuffed animals

Toddlers and young children feel emotions they don’t yet know how to handle. 🧠

✨ When your child:
- Cries suddenly
- Screams or throws a tantrum
- Gets upset over “small” things

…it’s often emotional overload, not misbehavior.

✨ Why this happens:

- Their brain is still developing
- They don’t have words for big feelings
- They need help regulating emotions

💡 What helps more than punishment:

- Stay calm and close
- Name the feeling: “You’re upset. I’m here.”
- Offer comfort before correction

💙 Remember: Connection comes before correction.
