COMMUNITY POLICING!
While Officer Yaneff, Decorah Police Department, delivered the last of the "FILL THE SQUAD" donations that trickled in (Thank You, Community) he took time to do, what I would guess, is one of the best parts of his job - interact very positively with area youngsters.

It takes a great community,
and an incredibly great community of volunteers (many supplied through NE Northeast Iowa RSVP). One of our great volunteers is Larry. Larry, like so many of our volunteers, does whatever needs & can be done to help us achieve our Mission:

"As a faith-based organization, the Decorah Community Food Pantry shares food with local Iowans facing food insecurity. We strive to interact with clients in a welcoming and respectful manner and to reduce food waste."

Larry drives a "Food Rescue" route rescuing perfectly good food from local retail partners that we share with our pantry neighbor/clients, reducing what otherwise would go to our local landfill.
Then Larry does "whatever" needs to be done - like sorting large bags of potatoes into pantry manageable bags, and, when sometimes necessary, deals with out-of-date items - like soured milk. Yuck! Thanks, Larry.

And if that's not enough. Larry brings his granddaughters to the pantry to learn about food insecurity and food waste in our NE Iowa community. And if that's not enough - his granddaughters and a friend had a lemonade stand and donated the proceeds to DECORAH COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY ❤ Thank you girls! 😁

COMMUNITY!
It takes a great one and we've got it! ❤

For the past week our great(er) community, 4 local grocery stores, and the DECORAH POLICE DEPARTMENT worked to "FILL THE SQUAD" - and they did - Saturday August 8 delivering over 1500 pounds of food to DECORAH COMMUNITY FOOD PANTRY.

We can address the issue of food insecurity and reducing food waste because we have a community comitted to both (and one another!) ❤

MONDAY FOOD RESCUE at Decorah Community Food Pantry ❤

"Food Rescue" is a partnership between Feeding America and retail stores in local communities. Here in our Pantry, we do Food Rescue with local retailers (Fareway, Hy-Vee, Walmart, and 3 Kwik Stars) Monday through Friday starting each day at 8 AM. This keeps an incredible amount of "mostly" perfectly good food out of our landfill.

Here are some pics from Monday July 6 showing the incredible effort of volunteers (and staff) as we reduce food waste by sorting food rescue to ensure food insecure families in NE Iowa can access this still perfectly good food. Over the years Decorah Community Food Pantry has rescued over 1 million pounds of Food Rescue food.

"You can't address food insecurity without addressing food waste" and Decorah Community Food Pantry - THANKS to all our volunteers and our community partners - is doing our part. ❤

A community committed to service....

When the Decorah Lions arrived in our Pantry to donate in the name of Lions Pres. Charlie Smock, they arrived before all their members, so they did what service groups do: they served by helping unload our Thursday morning Food Rescue trucks. THANK YOU, Decorah Lions, for your service, friendship, and the donation.

We celebrated Charlie this week as he prepares to relocate to Wisconsin (❤ 💑❤) for all his wonderful service to our Pantry and to our community. ❤
