Fruitful Offerings Removing barriers to fresh food through free vegetable plants, education and community support

Fruitful Offerings, an affiliate of the Dedham Food Pantry, is working to help pantry clients and those in need to integrate more fresh food into diets by providing vegetable plants in growing containers, teaching self-sustaining growing skills and offering free cooking classes. Fruitful Offerings was co-founded by Dedham residents Ann Miranda and Andrea Gilmore. In June 2014, over 100 tomato plan

ts in ready to grown containers were distributed to pantry clients who each received a plant, tomato cage, fertilizer and trilingual growing instructions. The lightweight, compact and portable planting containers, (45 were donated by Grainger of Norwood, MA) help to simplify the growing process. The plants were grown, cared for and repotted by the Endicott Community Greenhouse, a non-profit that gives back to the Dedham community by offering educational programs at Dedham elementary schools and scholarships. Our donation to the Endicott Community Greenhouse will help others and stay in the Dedham community. Beginning October 2014, Fruitful Offerings is hosting free cooking classes in support of our mission to remove barriers to using fresh ingredients. The classes will focus on easy to prepare recipes and techniques using fresh vegetables and foods readily available at the pantry. Whole Foods and First Church of Dedham have generously sponsored these classes. Our new Director of Cooking Classes is Virginia Hickey-Ferentinos. In 2015, Fruitful Offerings hopes to expand the variety and quantity of vegetable plants distributed to pantry clients as well as continue our cooking class series and link clients to free gardening classes provided by the Town of Dedham. This charity would not be without the support of some very special people including our Chief Technology Officer, Mason Miranda who also wears many other hats simultaneously, the generosity of Mia Xavier of Compass Promotion, our public relations and promotional management firm, Kerry Hawkins, artist, fine art photographer and Dedham Square Artist Guild Co-Founder who designed our beautiful new logo and all the volunteers and donors. If you are interested in donating, volunteering or if you would like more information, please contact Ann Miranda at [email protected].

Thanks to the hard work of Fruitful Offerings Garden volunteers Kaegan McLeod, Jeremy Chang, Matt Mahoney, Nick Valle and Eliot Moore, Dedham Food Pantry clients had more fresh vegetables to eat this summer. The group, led by Maggie Moore, grew the vegetables for people in need in our community while also learning how to grow their own food from start to bounty!

Thank you, Dover-Sherborn Middle School eighth graders for volunteering today at the Fruitful Offerings Gardens! The students put together planters and planted beans. This project will grow between 25 to 30 pounds of green beans that will be donated to the Dedham Food Pantry. They came across the toad that was the mascot for the day.

A thank you to Dedham Savings for supporting the Fruitful Offerings program that gave away 556 plants this year! Also a huge shout out to the Endicott Community Greenhouse and its volunteers who grow the hearty and lush plants we gave to Dedham Food Pantry clients this year.

Thank you to also to E.O.M.S. Recycling, Inc. and all our volunteers Maggie and Charlene who grow fresh produce at the Fruitful Offering Gardens for the Dedham Food Pantry. I also need to thank my amazing husband, Mason Miranda and son Cole for the time and love they give to this program each year.

The 556 plants have the potential to grow thousands of pounds of produce and many opportunities to pass along vegetable plant growing skills.

The Fruitful Offerings program gives away vegetable plants in self-contained, reclaimed buckets along with fertilizer and instructions in five languages. We also give away vegetable plants for gardens and have free garden plots in the Fruitful Offerings Gardens, where Dedham Food Pantry clients can grow their own produce. Some of the garden plots are used to grow fresh produce that is donated to the Dedham Food Pantry.

It takes a village and I am so thankful to be a part of this generous village, Dedham.

We harvested beans from gardens today for the Dedham Food Pantry. The zucchini plants have lots of flowers and the tomato plants all have bunches of fruit. We can always use help from volunteers interested in weeding for as little or much as you want. No experience necessary! Contact us at [email protected].

Thank you Maggie and Dan for generously volunteering your time in the Fruitful Offerings Gardens. They care for and grow fresh food that is donated to the Dedham Food Pantry. Today, I dropped off a huge grocery bag of fresh arugula and snap peas that were harvested from the gardens. It’s people like Maggie and Dan that truly make an impact and make the world a better place.
