2015 was the last season Tim finished wild rice. Tim (L) and Spencer can be seen sitting in the shade looking at the green wild rice laid out to dry on the tarps. For several decades Tim bought and processed thousands of pounds of wild rice. Holm Made Wild Rice contributed 1,000s of dollars each year to the local wild rice pickers’ economies.

The last time Tim and I bought green wild rice was September 2015 in Bena, Minnesota. We went out in my Dad’s old pick-up with my Grandfather’s canoe on top the rack. We bought about 1200 pounds that afternoon.

WILD RICE UPDATE 2017 We bought more than 1,000 pounds of green wild rice this day at White Oak landing at Zemple, Minnesota just outside Deer River on Leech Lake Reservation.
This year Leech Lake Reservation began a new wild rice project with the U.S. Department of Agriculture for an estimated 100,000 pounds of finished wild rice. To accomplish this goal, green wild rice buying at lakes started at a record high $2.00 and went up to $2.50 right after Labor Day. The good news is a lot of wild rice was picked and many pickers made good money this year.

As November is Native American month it is important to recognize that Dennis Banks passed on this week at 80. Dennis is known for many things and many stories will follow for some time. Dennis is from Leech Lake Reservation and he also engaged in the activities and promotion of wild rice, maple syrup and other natural and traditional foods -- the gifts from the Creator. I am very glad to share my favorite photo of my friend Dennis that I shot about 15 years ago on Shingobee Island on the southwest shore of Leech Lake.

If you’ve ever traveled Hwy 2 between Bemidji and Grand Rapids you’ve probably seen a stand in Ball Club. It was operated for over 30 years by the late Tim

Happy New Year,

The New Year is a time of hope and reflection. While I have heard many nice expressions about the loss of Tim, most of his friends and family believe transforming his operation into a learn to earn operation for Boys and Girls Club is likely the best way to keep it all alive and running for all of us into the future.

I am very appreciative of Tim's niece Jessica who helped put together this page and also has been a great wild rice coordinator in St. Paul. I am also thankful to Betty and Eugene, Carol and Ben, Chad, Blaine, Becky, Kyle, my wife Vicki and the Boys and Girls.

We appreciate all of the help and business from people across Minnesota and beyond. If you have not had a chance to view our six minute video on this page please do. Scott Knudson did an excellent job along with Keith Secola flute music in the background.

Another great story was released on the Internet and in print by Indian country today about our boys and girls club wild rice project which can be viewed at page 6 in the article

http://digital.newsfromindiancountry.com/app.php?RelId=6.5.7.1

We got the project building roughed in, roof sheeted and covered and plan to start closing up the remaining openings so we can run heat and work inside during this remaining winter.

We will continue to sell wild rice and submit a few more grant applications for the project. It has been fun trying to pick up where Tim left off. Tim did a great job processing wild rice and smoking whitefish and is remembered positively by many people. It is a pleasure to carry-on these traditions and help pass them on.

Mii gwitch for a hopeful New Year and the new friends and successes we have enjoyed.

Good morning and Merry Christmas to All,

Thank you Lori! I’d like to share with everyone that if you're living in the Grand Rapids area, or travelling through, that my friend Lori Flohaug (Attorney-at-law) has agreed to be a point of sale for wild rice. Anyone looking for just a pound or two can certainly call on Lori Flohaug's office at 218-326-0929 and/or stop by at 520 1st Ave. NW, just a block or so northwest of the Itasca courthouse.

If someone in Bemidji would like to be a point of sale and pick for wild rice like Lori, I will be heading to Bemidji today and will be bringing wild rice to others and can drop 10-20 pounds at a local office. I will be going to Bemidji again next week. Jay Sommers asked about a point of sale in Walker which will be the Boys and Girls Club, hopefully starting tomorrow.

Anyone interested in a bulk amount of Wild Rice may contact Lori's Office or Facebook or email address [email protected]. We can either get it to Lori's office for pick up or use Postal Service to ship it.

Mii gwitch Lori. Santa’s watching!

Frank

Boozhoo (Greetings),
As part of a learn to earn project with Boys and Girls Club of Leech Lake Area, Holm Made Wild Rice is selling Manoomin (wild rice) to support seasonal fundraising as November is Native American Heritage month across our nation.
$5 of every $15 pound of wild rice sold goes to support local projects for the Boys and Girls Club like the Ball Club Living Cultural Resource Center.
This is a great opportunity to get locally gathered and processed Chippewa wild rice for your holiday dinners and gifts for your friends and family.
We use the US Postal Service for shipping with flat rate packages.
1 or 2 pounds of wild rice can be shipped out in a flat rate envelope for $6.50.
3 to 10 pounds of wild rice can be shipped out in a flat rate medium box for $14.
11 to 20 pounds of wild rice can be shipped out in flat rate large box for $19.
To order, contact [email protected], call 218-246-8843, or message our page.
Boys and Girls Club will also be doing targeted wild rice sales at various storefronts in Walker, Cass Lake, Deer River, Grand Rapids and Bemidji on several Saturdays before Christmas.
Watch for location and times updates!
Mii gwitch (Thank you)
