The risk of wildfire is still extremely high! Help keep yourself and your neighbors safe and follow all Stage 2 Burn Restrictions.

đźš« Stage 2 Burn Ban Remains in Effect đźš«
Fire danger is still high in Arapahoe County. Despite cooler temperatures on the way, conditions remain extremely dry statewide, and the risk for wildfire has not gone away.
It only takes one spark to start a fast-moving, dangerous fire.

🔥 Under a Stage 2 Burn Ban:
• No outdoor fires or campfires
• No charcoal grills or wood-burning fires
• No fireworks
• No open burning of any kind

Earlier this morning we were dispatched to a semi truck and trailer that was blown over onto its side on Highway 36. While enroute to the scene, another semi was found on its side, but there were no injuries at this scene, so crews continued to the first incident. Crews on scene worked to extricate the driver from the semi truck, and mitigate the diesel leak as well. We would like to thank our partners with Byers Fire Protection District 9, Bennett-Watkins Fire Rescue, HCA Healthone AirLife, Colorado State Patrol, and Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office for their assistance in these incidents.

Deer Trail Fire is mourning the loss of Adams County Sheriff Commander Karl Smalley who unfortunately passed away yesterday morning. Commander Smalley was a huge asset to all first responders along the east I-70 Corridor. He will be missed by all of us.

It is with deep sorrow that the Adams County Sheriff’s Office announces the passing of Commander Karl Smalley. On the morning of Dec. 8, 2025, deputies responded to a report of a missing person in Watkins. Upon arrival, deputies found Commander Smalley near Box Elder Creek. He was not breathing and was later pronounced deceased. Commander Smalley had just started his day and was on-duty at the time, and his passing is being treated as a line of duty death.

Commander Smalley, 67, honorably served the Adams County Sheriff’s Office for more than 30 years. He is survived by his wife. At the time of his passing, Commander Smalley served as the Commander of District 5, overseeing the Watkins and Strasburg areas. Throughout his distinguished career, he led several key programs, including the Explorer Post, Posse, Reserve Program, and Mobile Field Force, was heavily involved with the Rampart Search and Rescue Team and was a subject matter expert for driving instruction. His leadership, dedication, and influence were felt across the agency and the community.

Beyond his professional achievements, Commander Smalley was widely known as a kind, genuine, and compassionate individual. He was a devoted husband, a trusted colleague, and a dear friend to many. His warm presence and unwavering commitment to serving others left an enduring impact on the countless people who had the privilege of knowing him.

Commander Smalley’s contributions to the Adams County Sheriff’s Office and the community will forever be remembered. He will be deeply missed.

The family is requesting privacy at this time. More information on his funeral services will be released at a later date.

The Arapahoe County 9-1-1 Authority and its agencies (including the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office, Englewood Police Department, Glendale Police Department, Greenwood Village Police Department, Littleton Police Department, and South Metro Fire Rescue) have announced major upgrades to ArapAlert, the County’s emergency notification and 9-1-1 enhancement system that helps keep residents informed and first responders better prepared during emergencies.

ArapAlert allows residents to receive timely alerts about wildfires, evacuations, hazmat incidents, shelter-in-place orders, and other emergency situations via phone call, text message, email, and mobile app push notification—using multiple methods to increase the likelihood of notification. The upgraded system is powered by advanced mapping technology that enables first responders to target alerts to specific neighborhoods or even individual streets. This precision reduces confusion, improves communication, and helps ensure faster, safer evacuations.

Residents and travelers to Arapahoe County are encouraged to sign up or update their information today to ensure they receive timely, actionable alerts via text, email, or voice message. Users can also set preferences for how and when they receive notifications.

To register or update your information, visit www.ace911.org/arap-alert and sign up for ArapAlert today.

Today marks 24 years since the events of September 11th 2001. Today our nation lowered its flags to show remembrance for the 343 firefighters, 71 police officers, 55 military personnel, and 2,508 civilians. May we never forget the sacrifices they all made. Today we honor them.
