The Deering Police Department has an authorized strength of two full time Officers (a Chief of Police and a Patrol Officer), as well as four part time Officers. The Department provides primary law enforcement and public safety services for the Town of Deering, NH, which encompasses an area of approximately 32 square miles, and provides services to approximately 2,100 residents.

At the regularly scheduled Board meeting last Thursday the membership endorsed, by motion, the following guidelines for the public entering Town owned buildings.

"Given that there is an ongoing global pandemic and that cases of the virus, COVID-19, are currently on the rise, and that colder weather is on the way that will force many people indoors where there is less air circulation, this Board of Selectmen remains concerned about the health, safety, and welfare of Deering residents.

With the safety of Deering residents uppermost in our thoughts, and by the authority granted the Board of Selectmen under RSA 41:11-a (I) we, following CDC guidance to prevent the spread of the virus, mandate the wearing of face coverings and maintaining social distancing by the public when entering all town owned buildings."

The New Hampshire Municipal Association hosted a teleconference pertaining to Trick or Treat. In attendance were representatives from the NH Health and Human Resources as well as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Collectively they recommend that people who plan on participating in any Trick or Treat events maintain social distancing at all times. They also wanted to inform people that a Halloween mask or costume mask is not a substitute for a cloth mask in preventing the spread of COVID-19.

Deering will have Trick or Treat between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday, October 31, 2020. We are asking that anyone who chooses to participate in Trick or Treat this year does so while maintaining a high level of personal accountability and responsibility while following the recommendations and guidelines put out by the CDC.

CDC provides credible COVID-19 health information to the U.S.

On August 23, 2020 Captain Thomas Cavanaugh was presented the Commendation Bar of Distinguished Unit Action. This award shall be awarded to officers for outstanding service that resulted from teamwork as a unit rather than an individual effort.

In addition to performing his duties at an exemplary level, Captain Cavanaugh demonstrates an extraordinary commitment to the Deering Police Department as well as the Deering community as a whole. Captain Cavanaugh stepped in seamlessly between the months of December 2019 through May 2020 taking on countless extra duties and significantly increased the number of hours he spent serving his community while sacrificing time away from his family. After the retirement of the two fulltime Police Officers including the Chief of Police and the resignation of one part-time Officer, Captain Cavanaugh managed the Police Department as well as training a newly appointed Deering Officer. It is with great pleasure we were able to present Captain Cavanaugh with this award in recognition of the sacrifices he has made, his hard work and dedication to his community and the Deering Police Department.
