🔥 CITY FIRE ASSESSMENT UPDATE🔥

The City of DeFuniak Springs is considering a Non-Ad Valorem Fire Services Assessment to help fund and strengthen fire and rescue services. If approved, the assessment would take effect in October 2026.

This dedicated funding source would support critical services such as emergency fire response, firefighter staffing and training, fire station operations, equipment and apparatus replacement, fire prevention programs, and emergency preparedness efforts.

📊 Proposed Rate Scenarios (Not Final):
The City Council will select a final rate from the following funding levels:
• 60% funding: $238 per residential dwelling unit
• 55% funding: $218 per residential dwelling unit
• 50% funding: $199 per residential dwelling unit

Rates for commercial, industrial, institutional, and vacant land properties would be calculated based on square footage or parcel classification.

💡 Important Information:
• This is a special assessment
• Funds are dedicated specifically to fire protection services
• Calculations are based on a professional methodology study for fairness and equity
• Hardship assistance may be available for eligible homesteaded properties
• Public hearings will be held before any final decision is made

📅 Why it matters:
This program is designed to ensure reliable, long-term funding for emergency response services that protect lives, property, and community safety every day.

NOT APPROVED AT THIS TIME. If approved, the assessment would take effect in October 2026.

The Walton County burn ban has officially been LIFTED.

However, we want to remind our community that dry conditions still exist across our area, and wildfire risk remains elevated. The lifting of the burn ban should not be interpreted as an endorsement of outdoor burning.

If you choose to burn outdoors:
🔥 Monitor weather conditions closely
🔥 Avoid burning on windy or especially dry days
🔥 Keep water and suppression tools nearby
🔥 Never leave a fire unattended

WCEM will continue coordinating with the Walton Fire Council Advisory Committee, NWS Tallahassee, and our public safety partners to monitor conditions across the county. Questions? Visit our FAQ page ➡️ https://bit.ly/WaltonCoBurnBan

Thank you for your patience, continuing to help us protect our homes, responders, and community!
