On May 28, 2026, at approximately 12:28 a.m., DeKalb Police Officers responded to the 800 block of Edgebrook Drive for a person that was attacked by a male wielding a machete. Officers located the victim, who sustained a severe injury to his right forearm. Officers and members of the fire department provided immediate first aid, and the victim was transported to the Northwestern Medicine Kishwaukee Hospital for further treatment.
The offender, Joshua Boyer, approached a DeKalb Police Officer and admitted to attacking the victim with a machete over money. Officers learned from witnesses that Boyer made racial epithets towards the victim, during the attack and threatened to kill him. Boyer and the victim were living together. The machete used in the attack was recovered.
Boyer was charged and transported to the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office to await a detention hearing.

• (Attempt) First Degree Murder-Felony Class X
• Aggravated Domestic Battery- Felony Class 2
• Hate Crime- Felony Class 3
• Domestic Battery- Misdemeanor Class A (2 Counts)
The DeKalb Police Department conducted a thorough investigation into this senseless crime, leading to the swift arrest of this violent offender in a case that unfortunately highlights domestic violence and hate-motivated crime.
