ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

“We’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,” she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. “A lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.”

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

“I’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!” she said.

Today, we grieve the loss of Dolly Parton, who has done so much for our state, for E. Tennessee, and for literacy and helping children grow a love of reading.

Read a book to a child in her honor this this week.

Have your child read a book to you in her honor.

Sign your preschool aged child up for Dolly Parton's Imagination Library to help carry on her dream of every child having books of their own.

Thank you so very much for all you have done for us, Dolly. You will be sorely missed.

Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80. The country music legend was known for songs including “Jolene,” “I Will Always Love You” and “9 to 5.” She also starred in movies like ‘Steel Magnolias’ and ‘The Best Little Wh******se in Texas’.

I was talking with a patron about future plans, crafting and patterns, and I opened a drawer in a file cabinet - and found a whole stack of single subject college ruled notebooks, some college ruled composition books, a couple packs of looseleaf college ruled notebook paper, and a stack of pocket folders.

If anyone has a need for these for their students, please stop on by the library and grab some!
