DeLand Woman Arrested After Child Left in Hot Car; Bystander's CPR Credited in Early Response

A 3-year-old child was transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition Sunday afternoon after being left unattended in a vehicle for approximately two hours, according to DeLand Police Department officials.

At approximately 4:32 p.m., DeLand Police received a 911 call reporting an unresponsive child in the 300 block of New York Avenue. The DeLand Fire Department and Volusia County Fire Rescue responded to the scene, where a witness had already begun administering CPR prior to the arrival of first responders. The child was transported by ground to a local hospital in critical condition.

A preliminary investigation revealed that 27-year-old Latana Williams had left the child in her vehicle for approximately two hours while visiting a nearby plasma donation center. Williams was taken into custody and charged with Child Neglect, a first-degree felony. She denied any wrongdoing.

Captain P. Dice, who responded to the scene, said the child’s outlook appeared positive. He used the incident as an opportunity to remind the community about vehicle safety.

“Please take this as a reminder to always check your back seats,” Dice said. “Give yourself enough time when you’re traveling so you’re not in a rush when you arrive at your destination.”

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the DeLand Police Department at 386-626-7400.

This morning, DeLand Police Officers handed out D.A.R.E. completion awards to fifth graders at Edith I. Starke Elementary School, joined by Principal Mrs. Aivazis and Vice Mayor Davis.

These students spent time learning how to handle bullying, resist peer pressure, build self-esteem, give back to their community, and make smart choices when it comes to drugs. That is a lot to take on in fifth grade, and they showed up for it.

Congratulations to every student who completed the program. DeLand is proud of you.

DeLand Police had a great time at Power the Night and would not have missed it.

There is something special about seeing kids climb up into a truck, meet the people who serve their community, and go home talking about it. That is what these events are all about, and our officers were glad to be part of it alongside our friends at DeLand Public Works, DeLand Fire Rescue, and the Rotary Club of Downtown DeLand Grillmasters.

Thanks to everyone who came out. See you next year.

E-scooters and e-bikes are now included in the list of micro-mobility devices (MMDs) prohibited on downtown sidewalks. The corridor where this rule applies has also been expanded. Take a moment to look at the graphic attached so that you know where MMDs are allowed on sidewalks.

**Please note, medical mobility aides are allowed.

We want everyone to be able to enjoy DeLand. Banning these devices in the downtown corridor helps make sure the sidewalks stay safe for everyone.

Last night at the City Commission Meeting, the DeLand Police Department proudly pinned three new officers. Please join us in welcoming them to the badge.

Officer Garrett Shurdom was sworn in on March 23. A DeLand native and DeLand High School graduate, Garrett grew up surrounded by law enforcement. His father served as a K9 officer with the Casselberry Police Department, and his uncle was a SWAT Commander with the Seminole County Sheriff's Office. Their example shaped him, and now he is carrying that legacy forward right here in the community where he grew up.

Officer Lucas Formel was sworn in on March 30. Lucas was raised in DeLand before joining the U.S. Navy in 2013. After completing his service, he spent seven years with the Pensacola Police Department before he and his wife, Ashley, decided to return to DeLand for a closer family connection. We are glad the road brought him home.

Officer Benjamin Orden was sworn in on April 27. A 2022 DeLand High School graduate, Benjamin went on to complete his two-year degree at Daytona State College before joining the department. Disciplined, focused, and driven by a genuine desire to serve his community, he is ready to get to work.

Welcome to the DeLand Police Department, Officers Shurdom, Formel, and Orden. This community is lucky to have you.

**UPDATE: We have been reunited with our family!**
Have you seen our owners? DPD found these two pups today while out on patrol. They seem to be together but may have just been quick friends. One is a female doodle and the other is a male chihuahua. Both are very friendly. If these are your dogs, please call 386-626-7400 and ask for the Animal Control Officer. Their families will need to bring some kind of proof of ownership to reclaim them (such as a vet bill, adoption paperwork, etc.)

This week, the City of DeLand joins communities across the country in recognizing Law Enforcement Appreciation Week.

Every day, the men and women of the DeLand Police Department show up for this community. They respond to the calls no one else can, build relationships with the people they serve, and carry a responsibility that does not clock out at the end of a shift.

To every officer on our force: thank you.
