Three arrested at Delano DUI Checkpoint

On Friday, August 28, 2026, one subject was arrested for DUI, one subject was arrested for public intoxication, and five citations were issued for various other violations at a DUI checkpoint on Friday, August 28, 2026.

The DUI checkpoint was held in the 1400 block Fremont Street from 6:00 P.M. to 1:00 A.M.

Three drivers were cited for operating a vehicle while unlicensed or with a suspended/revoked license, 602 vehicles were contacted, and three subjects were arrested for other criminal charges including driving under the influence, bench warrants, and public intoxication.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on reported incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints is to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off roads.

Funding for this checkpoint was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Corporal R. Chavez and Detective C. Trimble had the opportunity to visit Pioneer Elementary during Community Helpers Week! They spoke with students about the important role police officers play in our community and answered questions about what it means to serve and protect.

The students also received some fun police-themed trinkets to take home! We appreciate Pioneer Elementary for inviting us and giving us the opportunity to connect with our community’s future leaders.

Bicycle and Pedestrian Safety Operation Planned for September 4th, 2026

Delano, Calif. – The Delano Police Department will conduct a traffic safety operation on September 4th, 2026, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., focused on the most dangerous driver behaviors that put the safety of people biking or walking at risk.

These violations include speeding, making illegal turns, failing to yield or provide right of way to bicyclists or pedestrians, or failing to stop for signs and signals.

“We all have places to be and not everyone gets there by car,” Chief Jerry Nicholson said. “Bicyclists and pedestrians have the same rights to the road but face even more risk without the protections vehicles have. We should all be looking out for one another.”

Delano Police Department Holding DUI Checkpoint August 28th


Delano, Calif. – The Delano Police Department will conduct a driving under the influence (DUI) Checkpoint on August 28, 2026, from 6:00 PM to 2:00AM at an undisclosed location within city limits.

DUI checkpoint locations are determined based on data showing incidents of impaired driving-related crashes. The primary purpose of DUI checkpoints are to promote public safety by taking suspected impaired drivers off the road.

“Impaired drivers put others on the road at significant risk,” Chief Nicolson said. “Any prevention measures that reduce the number of impaired drivers on our roads significantly improve traffic safety.”

The Delano Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications and over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. While medicinal and recreational ma*****na are legal, driving under the influence of ma*****na is illegal.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

On August 14, 2026, at approximately 12:35 PM, Officers with the Delano Police Department were dispatched to a residence within the 600 block of Kensington Street for a report of a theft.

During their investigation, officers learned that a home invasion robbery had occurred, involving multiple suspects who were armed with fi****ms. Currency, the victim's vehicle, and miscellaneous items were taken during the robbery. The Delano Police Department Investigations Bureau responded and assumed the investigation.

Flock Safety cameras assisted investigators with locating the victim's vehicle, which was found abandoned in a neighboring jurisdiction. Investigators authored a search warrant for a residence within the 1000 block of 22nd Avenue, and a tactical team from the Kern County Sheriff's Office was requested to assist in the ex*****on of the warrant. Delano Police Department drones were also utilized during the operation. The equipment and resources deployed resulted in a safe outcome, and evidence related to the home invasion robbery was located at the residence.
